Crays 2020

Put 4 pots in on Saturday with my boys off Mindarie.

First pull the next day- nothing.

Next day pots felt a lot heavier after a soak and got one red. Pro cray boat setting about 300 m off the beach.

I'm 1km offshore in 8m. Will try again in the morning.

How are you going so far?

We got

Mon, 2020-11-23 20:53

1 white from  6 pots. Cray was being monstered by an Occy. Got both... cray had about 3 legs left. Occy is in the freezer bound for pickling. Only pulled the pots twice this year and both times had a  Bronzie or 2 follow up a pot. Been potting James Service for quite a few years now and this is the first time we've seen them (good size buggers too, have to be around 8 footers)

edit. Should of put this in LJ's shark thread.

Sunday

Tue, 2020-11-24 07:31

We divied Sunday. Half way to Rotto. Lots of crays around. 95% still to shed with two shells. The balance soft whites. And as tiimmbo  mentioned above a surprising amount of surge. Don't put them too shallow.

Small numbers at hillarys

Tue, 2020-11-24 09:51

1 white and 1 red second day in a row, shallow hillarys with 6 pots well inside 3 mile. Might head deeper soon.

Gee whiz CJ. Are you giving

Tue, 2020-11-24 10:01

Gee whiz CJ. Are you giving up on a shallow run?   The low numbers across the board surely says it's a later run and not a crap run?   or does it?   usually the guys at two rocks are killing it a few days before OR and Hillarys. Even they are quiet atm so I'm prepared to stay in shallow for a while yet.

Good points

Tue, 2020-11-24 11:41

Some compelling points there, i know they havent moved yet as i have had pot in for 3 weeks and managed 8 reds and now starting to see some whites, but the circus has started and pots on pots is frustrating! I like shallow as its a quick in and out, gotta get back to the ramp before 6 to beat the bulk of the crowd.

Tue, 2020-11-24 12:09

What's the protocol with dropping pots around the pros? Mate at work has his in amongst them and he had a dead cray in one with all its legs missing but body intact. I just assume that was an occy?

Surprised pros

Tue, 2020-11-24 19:55

Working . I hear they have been guaranteed to be able to sell them for processed tails . But the whole cray gets weighed ,( then tails come off) which would come of there total tonnage . Massive income loss , amazing how one country can stuff up our local pro cray guys . Some must be hurting .

They don't help themselves

Thu, 2020-11-26 10:06

They don't help themselves when they only market to that country, especially when that country has a track record of using trade as a bargaining chip. Good to see finally they are getting organized to sell some quality live crays local.... getting $15 export and $60 local! Now if they got better organized they could make a killing selling fresh cooked crays for Xmas.

In the past the industry has done its self a diss-service selling crap frozen cooked crays to the local market. How many people have bought one and gone never again?

Hi guys just a quick question

Q example I have two pots in my name if I pull my first pot, I can take my eight cray bag limit for myself .

if there are more crays in the pot do I take them out and release them into the water or do I leave them in the pot and put back?

If you don't pull them out you can leave them in and chuck pot back in. If you pull them out they must go back in the ocean is the rule how I take it.

 What depth are you potting

Sun, 2020-11-29 11:35

What depth are you potting in? Maybe as bad as it sounds it might pay to move to where alot of floats are the heavy potted areas are usually that way because there are lots of crays there over time you can build a variety of good spots.

Mon, 2020-11-30 20:39

Number one is I don't have to turn when I hit the beach, straight to the water line then a quick nudge  when unhooked. And secondly Maneuverability it basically makes it piss easy to park up in my boat bay which is a bit of a squeeze. Most Caravan parks use the same process.

Today

Fri, 2020-12-04 10:46

Didnt go this morning based on the weather reports. I noticed that the wind dropped off by about 7am. What was it like of Ocean Reef around 5.30am? Lumpy?

Hillarys Crays

Fri, 2020-12-04 12:05

85 keepers from the last 4 days in close out of Hillarys (3 licences).  Everyone at the ramp seems to be doing pretty well.

Conditions were good at 7am this morning, and much better than forecast.

I think we were just lucky.  The live wind at 4.30 was around 20kn, and I know some pulled the pin on that basis.  Would have been ordinary, and what we were expecting, but it did drop right off between 7 and 9.
