Cross between Barramundi and Tripletail?

OK, here's an interesting one. Fishing with a mate at Flat Rocks he caught this nice looking fish around 45cm. Tail is not really clear, but was rounded. All our books and the wonderful Fishwrecked Identification Guide consulted in vain - no positive ID on this one.
Needless to say it was released after the pic was taken, but if its a keeper, we'd like to keep it next time.
Any positive identification appreciated.
Cheers

Yup
Concur with the above. Sand bass, most people think they've got their first barra only to be bitterly disappointed. Thats about the typical size for them.

OK, got it thanks
Thanks guys - awesome response time! I can go to bed now and sleep without it swimming in my head.
OK, so common name is a sand bass. Psammoperca waigiensis is its scientific name. Also known as Dwarf Palmer, Reef Barra and Waigeo Seaperch (Indonesia).
A fairly rare catch as far south as Geraldton?

I used to catch them around Gero a fair bit. Particularly while chasing Mulloway.

You'll find them metro GROGfish.
Catch them on the odd occasion Grant in metro waters, usually inside/on the way to Rotto.
