Cryovac

Looking at purchasing a vac pac to store meat, fish (if the weather brightens enough to get some more) and pre-cooked meals.
Just wondering if many of you use them, pros & cons, and which brands to look at, or not.
Seems to be a huge range in the pricing structure amoungst all the brands.
Cheers

Food Savers

Thu, 2007-09-13 17:13

we bought the Sunbeam Food Saver. Around $300 to buy the big one and get a few packs of the bags, etc. They are great cos the food lasts 3 or 4 times longer in the freezer (fish can last up to 3 yrs, as opposed to the usual 6 or so months normally packed). They also tends to hold the qualty of the food for a lot longer. They also dont give off any smell as the food is defrosting, which is quite handy if you have a cat that likes fish. The only con would be that if you get the lining up wrong while sealing the bags you can sometimes push out some fish juice which is pretty hard to clean out of the machine - makes it a bit stenchy.

How long have you had it for Scottbec. Just wondering of the longevity of the units. The initial outlay and continuing purchase of the bags is up there. so wouldn't want the thing to break down 2 weeks after the waranty expires.
I can see it getting a lot of use.

Awesome

Gully put me onto a cryovac machine and I've never regetted the day it was bought. Cost over $500 with bags, but how the fish/meat is preserved and how long it lasts makes it worth while. We got it from the North Beach butcher, will check up on what make and model. I can only say good things about them.

long lasting

yeah we've only had ours for a year, my in-laws have had theres for a few years and it doesn't miss a beat.

Ours also came with a few canisters which you can connect by hose to get them airtight too, fun for he whole family...

just checked out stocks - 48 x 980ml bags for $50 and 5.8m roll for $30 (Exmouth prices, maybe cheaper down south). good insurance for making the food last.

Thanks everybody for your input here. Lots of great info and advice. No more freezer burn for us.

Yep definately get one Jody - worth the money 10 times over.

Have had mine for nearly two years and is the one of the best things I have bought. And as for the weather - well I couldnt agree with you more. Not that I have much time to go fishing but it is the principal of the matter.

MBL (Master Butchers

MBL (Master Butchers Limited) in Canning vale have the best Cryovac going IMO. Its around the $400 mark but they sell 99% to fishos, they sell all the bags too Ive got one and the fish I freeze in it retains that fresh just caught smell even aftewr 6 months and no freezer burn. You gotta get the thicker bags but.  Best thing Ive got in a long time.
