curios about jigging

I was just wondering , with all of the jigging that is going to be happening. what sort of gear ratio should you be looking for in a reel, weather it be o/head or eggbeater. im thinking lower ratio like around 4 to 1

that means if my back can hold out and i can get a spot on a boat my old sigma shakespear 080 would do the job at 3.0 to 1

Measure the retrieve per handle revolution, measuring ratio on its own isn't very informative.

4;1 for sambo jigging?
Maybe, but you'll be winding like a demon to keep those speed jigs working
Personally id go above 5; ratio. Check your cm's per revolution on the reels too.
I had the Pe 4 jigging master with 4;1 ratio and it was comftable to use but dreadfully slow.

Well, A subjet dear to my heart at the moment.....no dount others will disagree, but heres my 20c worth:
- Ratio does not matter that much, it is retrieve per turn that is more important I think.
- Pelagic jigging (ambers/Sambos) - at least 95 cm per turn. I went for a Stella 10,000 for my PE5 setup, as I could not get my mechancial jigging rythm going with the 102 cm retrieve of the Penn 850 I used initially. The 10,000 gives 119 cm per retrieve, perfect for my style of mech jigging, BUT it wears you out quicker than the slower speed reels, and definatley makes the fight a bit tougher......however, beig able to really crank up the speed on the simple knife jigs life a Jackknifer helps get the fish excited IMO. Also, I thought this would be a good option as a light popper/stickbait reel up north as it has a similar speed to the 18,000, obviously without the weight...and grunt....
- General consensus is a Stella 8,000PG, at around 95cm? and it would certainly make a better all round reel, but you will really have to crank the handle to get max speed. A more comfortable reel though.
- JM make very low ratio (4:1) OH and the smaller ones in my opnion are way too slow....same as my Calcutta at 60cm per turn, OK for demersals, too slow for anything else.
- For PE3 OH, I am going Ocea Jiger with 95 cm....I think this is spot on as I already have the speed demon 10,000 but want a PE3 I can jig with all day.
- demersal spin : seen most guys with PG twinpowers or Stellas sunning arounf 75 cm, making a nice light but powerful reel....I have used my Tierra at 86cm per turn, again, love the speed but a little les power....around 80 cm would be my pick.
Hope this helps
