be surprised if they ever turn up in the swan...?
I know squid get caught at Claremont (jetty) but cuttlefish normally like a cave or reef to hide in

 Never caught any cuttlefish

Tue, 2016-09-06 13:45

Never caught any cuttlefish landbased. Nab a few in cockburn sound when squidding, some days you get 3-5 in a bag of 30 'squid' other days none. Sometimes get the big bastards offshore when fishing with baits.

Landbased I'd probably try one of the rock walls in Freo, the one behind cicarellos (spelling?) in freo may be a good option. The one with a small round a bout at the end of the road is a decent LB squid spot and would be in with a chance at a cuttle.

I've caught them at South Mole when I was a kid, so maybe you still can.

Yewiw - I agree the smallish

Tue, 2016-09-06 14:50

Yewiw - I agree the smallish cuttlefish taste better than squid, when you get the big bruisers offshore they are tough as an old boot no matter how I cook them, or how long I cook them for. Better off using the big boys as bait.

Have never caught let alone seen the large ones you guys get offshore down there, the only ones that I caught and I dare say can be caught landbased would be the smaller models or do they get large ones landbased?

You're looking for more rocky

Tue, 2016-09-06 15:45

You're looking for more rocky areas for cuttlefish. You will get them off Henderson cliffs, Fremantle rock groynes (I get them regularly in one of the boat harbours) and don't be afraid to slow your retrieve right down as cuttlefish will follow it for longer and then nab it right as you come to the rocks.

When diving on Boy In A Boat Reef of Hillarys

Wed, 2016-09-07 10:06

There were heaps in the reef. Big Buggers. To be fair this was 4 years ago.

Also seen them at the old jetty down in Freo shore diving. Can't remember the name of it though. You follow the old wooden reminants of the Jetty off the beach and swim out till you hit the reef in about 8m of water. Would be a fair cast there though.

Someone could help with the actual name for this place I have forgotten it! It is a popular dive spot.

Cheers,

D80

Big reef ledges that are undercut, put a live herring near it and you get big ones, winter has been the best. Bycatch for me but you will get them.

Cuttlefish in the Swan

Sat, 2016-09-10 01:34

YES they are in the river, big ones too...

I specifically target cuttlefish in the Swan, Not with jigs though..

I hunt them at night with a torch & spear, walking thru the shallows near rocky drop offs...

Only its mother could love something as ugly as those things I must admit I have never tried eating one.
