cycling and fishing western Australia

Hi Everyone!

I posted a few weeks back about my plan to cycle up the West coast fishing as I go.  I've figured quite a few things out from fishwrecked and have a plan which goes as so..

Arrive in Perth on the 14 april and get my self together over a week and hopefully fish the swan and have a look about before starting north on the bicycle..

Because of logistics on the bike, the best way for me to try and catch some decent fish will be to stop for a few days in likely looking places.

These are what i thought...first a somewhere around Jurien before heading on to kalbarri to fish the Murchinson estuary and beach. Then up to steep point probably just for a look (as my water supply probably won't let me stay there for long) and then onto shark bay for some beach fishing. Then onto carnavon where i might try and work for a while..After that  i will check out Quobba before I take a while out in Exmouth as that seems like the place to be!!

After Exmouth onto Karratha possibly via Pilbara region, then obviously a stop at Port Headland and then onto Broome and thats where the plan starts to fizzle out..

It would be great if you guys could let me know if there are any 'must see places' that I have missed out! Of course i will be trying to fish many more place than i have mentioned but it would be good to know where i shouldn't miss.

And again i would be much indebted to anyone who wants to meet up along the way for a fish.

One last question; are the shimano t curve revolution travel rods available in Perth?

You can follow my trip at www.worldbiker.blogspot.com and i'll put some updates on fishwrecked when i can,

Hope to meet some of you guys in the coming months,

 All the best, Scott

sounds like a great plan. wish i had the energy to do such a trip.

as you said there will be other places your going to fish. Coral Bay is a spot worth going to if you enjoy a bit of snorkling.

looking forward to seeing some pics and reading about your adventures in the West Oz region. one thing tho, do you realise how far it is from Perth to Broome.

Good luck Scott

Not sure where you're staying

Not sure where you're staying in Perth, but Campbells in Leederville is pretty central and they sell the Shimano T-Curve Revolution Travel Rods.

Can't really help you with a fish, but I can point you in the right direction if you need to top up your bike supplies or need to do any repairs.

Just be aware

that the Easter period as a whole will be very busy on the roads and you will struggle to find vacancies in any accomodation providers.

Good luck and I'm sure it will be an interesting trip.

Im on holidays from around the 19th of April - 9th May.  If you would like to go out for a bit of small boat inshore/river fishing around Perth, weather dependant I should be able to set something up.  I will send you a PM with my email and phone number.

When you get up here to Karratha give us all a hoy

I am sure weather permitting someone will take you out.

Neels

And I am sure the same go all the way up the coast. As for steep point. Mate that is a challenge that will make the cobblestone section of the Tour de France look like nothing. Unless you get a lift I would rather go Quabba than SP for the trouble, and with a bike you wont be able to carry a heavy enough rig for the real action at steep point IMO. See what others think though. Only been there as a younster.

Thanks for the tips guys, I

Thanks for the tips guys,

I suspected steep point would be a challenge! And as you said Neels, i won't be able to carry enough gear to fish properly. I would love to see the place though because of the history of whats been caught there in the past.. I'll have to see how things are looking when i'm there on the road and if it looks like i can arrange some extra water supplies i will go for it (can probably only carry 20 litres)..

I'll give you a shout when i reach Karratha!

I realise its a fair way up to broome but when cycling you break the trip up into sections and expect it to take a long time so in theory its no problem. The main thing to overcome will be the heat so early morning and late afternoons will be the order of the day. If the roads are good (asphalt) and the moon is out, then night time can be a good to cover a few k's.

Thanks Till for the rod advice..thats good to know as my mid sized travel rod got snapped by an angry mahseer in India. As they have stopped making it here i'm in a bit of a pickle but with one of those shimanos i should be ok..

Thanks Matt, I thought it would be pretty busy regarding accomodation but this shouldn't be a problem as i will be camping most of the time. Will take a hostel when the oppurtunity is there to have a rest and get refreshed..

Cheers Bryan, that would be great to hook up mate!

All the best, Scott

Cheers guys, should have

Sun, 2011-04-03 20:05

Cheers guys, should have enough cash to get going to begin with but some work up the coast would be excellent tho..

basically I've got a degree in Ecology which i haven't really put to use as i have usually only been able to take temporary jobs between travelling.  For the last ten years have mainly been doing horticulture based jobs, landscaping, garden design, tree work etc. I spent a year managing one of the top uk gardener's garden. And i also have a good understanding of ranching and game managment after helping to run the family game/cattle farm in South Africa.

Can turn to pretty much anything and I thought about looking into the mining sector and also trawlers? A dutch girl I know found a job as assistant geologist for a mine which looked like a pretty good deal! I guess in her case it was just a case of meeting the right people as she had very little experience in that field.

I also met a japanese guy up in Tibet who reckoned the wages up in Broome were pretty good when working in the tourist industry. At the time i was surprised how much he got paid for pretty basic work, but i guess that it is very dependent on season.

Any more pointers would be great..

All the best, Scott

just make sure your gear is safe and when working make sure youre not getting ripped off . a lot of people will take advantage of the travelers as far as wages go. check the wage line on the net for the correct amount you should be earning
