Cyclone prediction
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2011-02-10 16:49
I'm going in early and calling the low building over the top of the NT as a good W.A cyclone by mid to late next week. Any of you northerners with me on this one, got a name for it yet or too early. Had some awesome thunder and lightening from this low that just passed the coast last night, don't mind the show as long as they don't destroy everything. Going on Aust's current form, you think one of us northern towns are going to get it. :(

that is an early call
the mjo is still quiet low and doesnt look like returning for at least a week even no the laNina is still strong it may have past its peak! so im thinking if it does turn into a cyclone its not going to be very strong! really strange weather up here this year though

Let's hope that whatever
Let's hope that whatever happens, there is no destruction like what Yasi caused over east. And let's also hope that the season is well and truly over by the time I get to Coral Bay at the start of April.

maybe
I think once its passed Darwin and heads towards Kununurra it will start dropping and build up steam with the hot water. May be wrong, but I guess thats weather forecasting. :)

these days who knows??? Water
these days who knows??? Water is so hot in that tropical band now that models are finding it difficult to perdict growth rates rationaly.
http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/4day_col.shtml
but Adam you may be right, but I'd guess a small Cat 3 and closer to Cat 4 when it cruises into the Kimberlies,
Watch the formation on the projection here of that tropical low cell in the Gulf of Carpentaria !!!! into a heavy water bundened mass on the wxmaps model. If they right then that's CAT5 material if it moves West and into the hot water's of the Kimberlies
http://wxmaps.org/pix/aus.pw.html
http://wxmaps.org/pix/aus.vort.html
I'll go as far as saying by midday Wed 16th we will have a Cat 2~3 cyclone in the NT region moving slowly NW towards Darwin

according to the rio website
it will track along the coast but a long way off and may hit cat 1 but only for a short period! it poses no threat to the coast and doesnt even look like the pilbara will get any rain out of it

yip thats the one I'm
yip thats the one I'm watching too. May only be just under 1000mbar by now, but it's carrying a massive amount of water vapour if you look at the links I put up and has the potential to grow into a monster if it cruises that hot water across the north at the moment.
lets hope it stays well away from the coast,

Like you some amateur watcher. And I dont know if I am just interested or keeping a close eye on this. But the water is hot as hell. Got a recording on the Sounder off Dampier of 33.2degress C. Looked at the sounder and thought no way, but then a hoof overboard proved it was like a sauna in there.
Anything brewing in that heat has a potential and yes Adds I think we are no way finished with this season yet.
Call it Carlos or Diane (I think they are the next in line)
Having organised Rally Oz for all those years not sure about Carlos, as Carloz Sainz had a nickname of El Rolladoor here, ie total rolls and destruction. So I am a bit worried about Cyclone Carlos El Rolladoor rolling down this way. LOL.

looks like we may have two cyclones off the coast by thursday
or friday!! heres the latest
Satellite imagery this morning shows widespread convection over tropical waters north of WA and the Timor and Arafura Seas.At 4am WST a low was located near 18.5S 116E, about 250 kilometres north of Karratha. Over the next three days the low is expected to move towards the west southwest to be located to the northwest of Exmouth by Thursday. The low may develop into a tropical cyclone on Thursday or later in the week.
Likelihood of this system being a tropical cyclone in the Western Region:
Tuesday: Low.
Wednesday: Moderate.
Thursday: High.
Friday: High.
At 4am WST a Tropical Low, 1004 hPa, is located over the western Top End, near Darwin. The low is expected to move slowly northwest during the next few days and may move into the Timor Sea tonight or Wednesday.
Likelihood of this system being a tropical cyclone in the region on:
Tuesday: Very low.
Wednesday: Low.
Thursday: Moderate.
Friday: Moderate.

The Race is on!!
I have had much more interest from Kcity perspective in the NT low, as the other one is looking like either heading west and not bothering us, apart from belting us with so far 78mm of rain in about 4 hrs. Maybe with this weird season it might head down and scare the southerners, but doesnt look that way from EC.
see model.

PS
Some off the models look intersting for the SW (ie BOM) and others dont (ie ECMWF) Might be a wackie season.
Race on still. Which one will go cyclone 1st. The Exxy one or the NT one.
I bet Carlos will go first and by some models woory the southerners, then Diane will probably worry us up here, then head south and cause more grief down south. Weather AFU.

The other one of the WA coast at the moment, is hard to predict, if it turns east could clean up canarvan, at a cat 2-4 range!

this has become a real season
this has become a real season of terror for the north!
Looking at hot-water temps off the north across to PNG, the place is boiling and on average 3 to even 4 deg above the Feb 5 year average.
Whats more the currents off WA are running a lot faster deep out and hotter, with water than normaly pooled up and circled around Shark Bay, now heading south.
I'd not be surprised if some one got GT's off the Abrohlos isalnds this year.
As for the wild willies, we could see two make land fall in WA in the next 7 days and then aftet that who knows what the hell mother nature is throwing our way!.
I just may stay here in Adelaide and enjoy the calm sea and weather for an another week or so...lol

Damn
I was wrong. NT one gone cyclonic first. I bet the Exxy one was Carlos, but now it will be Diane. That is to nice a name to scare the Southerners. I recon landfall between gero and Perth. ECMWF however shows it heading way west, BOM not so lucky for the South.
But then who knows how to predict them, and even though "Diane" is way south they can have a weird tendency to turn topsy on us, and do sudden turns and behave like a Yoyo.
As for Carlos, bying bigger tie downs. LOL
We Are wt enough ATM thank you very much in Kcity.
US Navy 1 madagascar, 1 Exxy, 1 Darwin and last off Qland. And I bet more to come. Yes Tony the water is bloody hot up here. As mentioned above a mid 30 reading on the sounder, and it felt hotter than our spa.

Darwin must be well under
Darwin must be well under water by now, that eye has hung around Darwin outer subburbs since very early this morning when I first saw it on the weather radar.
I will bet we going to see a record rain fall for 24hrs there today!!!! Also some areas have seen the eye pass over it three times in 24hrs now!!! WTF whats the chances of that, the bugger is circling like a mako shark sensing blood!!!

Me thinks fishing in Shark
Me thinks fishing in Shark Bay is F@!#$ for now till next month! That not so ladylike Dianne is going to sweep down the coast and my guess follow the Leuwen Current till it smacks into Geraldton or maybe even as far south as Jurien as a Cat3~4 mother @#$%@!#%
As for old Carlos, he is taking a breather, will be back to Cat1 by the weekend and we can expect him to do a nice arc around the Kimberlies sight seeing and getting stronger. My guess for him is Broome as Cat2 then into the hot water again back up to Cat3 and hit Karratha's cyclone allie at Fortescue river area again as a Cat2.
ps the water behing Cyclone Dianne is still HOT, telling us a lot of energy is flowing into the region even after loads of water was sucked up. For those that don't know or can't remember fom school...lol, when wate revaporates from a large body on the surface, it tradionaly cools the surface, as it robs energy from the main body to convert the liquid to a vapour that then rises. This is main energy source for cyclones, the rule of thumb is normaly a drop of 3 to 4 degrees in water temps after a cyclone has passed over a water mass and increased in strength. WELL that rule is now @#$% for these cases, as the water is still hot and still warming in some areas...now that bloody scary. Welcome to Global Warming worse case weather condtions!

Both BOM and ECMWF Models
Are so different. I dont think even the Weather gods know what is going on. By both looks like poor old carlos has crashed and burned, but I doubt that and like tony said, nicelt reform and then come down here somewhere, hopefully not Kcity as I am truely sick of cleaning up after all the rain, and more importantly WTF am I going to do this weekend.
We have a rule to get out at least once every weekend and Willy Weather looks suck for the weekend, nice drop on Monday. Perhaps contemplating a negative POETS day (for those not in the know POETS =Piss Off Early Tomorrow's Saturday is a positive poets, a negative is when you do it on Monday).
But with some second thought, with all this rain about maybe Oz will be covered in water and there will be new fishing spots everywhere!!!!! LOL.

Flood alert
We are expecting a fllod of over 6 metres on the weekend from heavy rain inland over the last 24 hours with some places receiving over 120mm and with Diana breathing down our necks it looks like the bus is going to move to another location. Might be interesting getting a 10 tonne bus out on water soaked caravan park dirt roads.

I did a little bit of
I did a little bit of research last night, and found some interesting stuff to explain why we getting wollloped again by whirlies down this way.
http://data.theweather.com.au/access/imageserver.jsp?image=grads/sst/sstanom_hires.latest.aus.png
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/climate/indicator_sst.jsp?c=ssta
look at the difference in our temps off WA compared to the last ten years average.
quoted from webpage"
The sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) is the difference between the observed SST and the climatological SST. These anomalies are calculated on a weekly basis.
Positive SSTAs are usually correlated with increased regions of convection (cloudiness and rainfall) while negative SSTAs are usually correlated to reduced convection.
SSTAs can be used as an indicator of the phase of global climate fluctuations, such as the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
The data displayed in this map is the weekly average, centred on the date shown"
We averaging now 3deg + to the norm all the way down in the current zone and this is whats feeding the whirlies heading our way and dragging them south.
now look at these temps for last few days!!!!

and this is very intersting reading, even if it's 16 years old, but gives you an insight into where they think we where heading back in the 1990's...
http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/frr/frr111/frr111.pdf
the bottom line is our last three years average is now above the peaks for the period 1990~1994
I'm trying to track a graph from the CSIRO for sea temps off Exmouth for last 50 years, I know it exists, as most of the data was collected by the US Navy when they had the base there. This will show the overall trends. Same goes for Rat Island data.

a good idea of the prediction that fell short, they under estimated the climate change growth in sea temps in many areas by nearly 200%, ie predicted 1 deg and we got 3 in certain localized areas...
http://www.oceanclimatechange.org.au/content/images/uploads/temperature_table2.jpg
average for all Australia remember!
now focus on the WA south region off Shark Bay to Metro region..
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/climate/indicator_sst.jsp?lt=wzstate&lc=was&c=ssta
and connect to the Exmouth region,
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/climate/indicator_sst.jsp?lt=wzstate&lc=wan&c=ssta
and you see that dark blood red / mud brown region, thats 4 deg hotter than normal and drawing everything down our way, from marlin to cyclones!!!

yes this one has been
yes this one has been interesting in that it's also turned on itself for awhile like TC Carlos did over Darwin. Bom still showing it going parrallel to the coast.
i'm not certain it will go west and out to sea, too much hot water close to Shark Bay and in the Leeuwin Current to not draw it south still some more. But who knows these days!!!
As for TC Carlos, it's back to a Cat1 again and if crusies over the top end and back into the sea above Broome it could do bloody anything... with that hot cell still there. Also if you looked at the links I put up the region just off Indonesias coast is lower in water temp that unsual and we higher, showing a marked shift south of the warm waters of that region. Wonder if this is the new battle ground for Cyclones now about 400km closer to us than before
