Daiwa emcast 4500
Hey guys, I've been using the search on site and have read a few of the users of this site use or have owned them before.
my question is this, apon looking at one today ( first time in person and not on a screen) when winding it I notice the spool raises up a lot higher than most reels I've used which I gather is what makes it better for casting or some such. When the spool is at it's peak I notice that underneath it the under casing ( if that's correct wording for it) has 3 or 4 slits in it, making it possible to see into the internal part of the reel , normally only visible when I've removed the spool from my other reels.
Will this be ok or cause constant Maintenace issues? Is it sealed enough? I gather daiwa would have thought about it a lot but just would like other users opinion,
Hope that all makes sense and hope someone can share some insights
Cheers , peg

interesting query
the link below should be the scheme...i think.

Are you referring to part 87 the rotor?
Or 96...if 96, no worries its to prevent the line from snagging under the spool present on my Saltigas and Ultegras.
If 87.....its a slightly different config but exactly the same principle as ultegra xsa ci4 and saltiga surf.

Hey greyheads, thanks heaps,
Hey greyheads, thanks heaps, it's part 87 that had me worried, could just imagine a stiff south wester blowing sand or salt spray getting into there.

Yep,
Mine gets heaps of sand and shit in there but at the end of the day it is a budget surf reel.
Might be why they don't make them anymore? Is the wind cast different?

Shame you say that Matt, up
Shame you say that Matt, up until that its was my choice, good casting, good capacity, reputable brand, and not too expensive. Now possibly back to drawing board....
have you had any problems with yours?

Honestly,
if you keep them clean and dont run too heavy line, IMO max 20lb (the body and rotor will flex at higher drag settings) they are great. But they still are at the budget end of this class of reel.
Personally mine gets used very rarely now (i've had 2 over the last 10yrs as my go to Salmon reel)but now i've found if you match a better rod to a better reel you get the same casting distance without requiring a 'long cast' design of reel.

Will only be using 15lb for
Will only be using 15lb for my tailor, salmon, bonito rod, but also will be taking it north every now and then so some queenies and trevs and the likes
i liked if for the capacity it had ( if case I hooked into one of the tuna or mackeral species I've heard pop up from time to time)
Does any one have any other reel suggestions ? It will be going on my 9ft Wilson wasp, and the emcast 4500 suited it almost perfectly in size and weight

Stradic 5000 fj
Brilliant reels available around at $199. Easily get 300 metres of braid at 20pd. No spare spool but always grab one at a later date if neccessary.
I have a 4000 and have knocked over 80cm tailor without raising a sweat!

No problem peg.did you
No problem peg.
did you actually take the spool off and look underneath I should imagine its a fully sealed system. At a guess I would expect the 4 slices in the rotor act as vents and diffuse the airflow but its a guess. I would take another look and see what you find. Re. Matts comment... I agree to an extent a better rod and reel will give better performance. However, conical spools on a reel of similar and even slightly less quality will enable longer casts.
The emblem pro's are a good mid budget reel with long cast spools perhaps worth considering, I have a penn conquer 7000 from when I first started that I love to bits and with a quick service recently it's a great mid size reel and fairly versatile

yeh i may have to have
yeh i may have to have another look, i did take off the spool in store, and i imgagine there would be a o-ring type set up to seal it? but am still skeptical after looking at it.
may just go back to the search,
i know the question has been done, but if anyone is using a spinning reel 4000-5000 in size thats around
$200 max and has the capcity to hold 300m of 15lb braid, and preferable has an extra spool, that they would reccomend, please by all means fire away..
many thnx Greyheads and MMiller for the advice

yeah I just got the 6000
yeah I just got the 6000 model and noticed the same thing, the spool raises very high. I haven't spooled mine up yet but was think of putting on 30lb as its a fairly large reel so I can chase some mulloway and possibly lb pinkies.

i think if they are cleaned
i think if they are cleaned Aaron they may be ok and maybe since Matt mentioned 20lb max for the 4500 maybe 30lb would be ok for the 6000?
looking at yours mate does it have a good seal under the spool?

the seal itsnt that great,
the seal itsnt that great, but im using mine for bait fishing so I guess wont be winding constantly, hopefully should minimise the chances of sand and salt damage.

now lets not get too
now lets not get too excited....Daiwa, as per any manufacturer, can at times make some average products, but they wouldn't design something that is inherently flawed (with the exception of the windcast of course!!). To correct my earlier post, the slots in the rotor are simply guides for the spool to when oscillating up and down. part 96 sits in the slots of the rotor. Admittedly I had a very cursory glance at the scheme first time round but looking again I would have wanted to have seen (as you mentioned peg) a couple of gaskets, o-rings, seals or similar somewher in parts 60-69 or 90-93. Now that isnt to say the reels mechanical internals arent fully protected, but at ~100 bucks you wont be getting the level of sealing you will with a more expensive reel.
660g for the emcast is pretty heafty on a 9ft'er shaving a 100g off that will be a lot nicer for casting all day.

Motackle
Motackle has a massive sale on at the moment and you can get an Emblem for $201. slightly above budget but worth a look, bad news is sale finishes tomorrow. Saltiga Surfs are going for $374 which is a very good deal.

Love my Emcast 4500 matched
Love my Emcast 4500 matched to my 10ft Sensor Surf. I use it all day casting for Tailor and Salmon. Been running with it for 3 years now and have had no problems with it at all, no issues with sand or salt. Just give a light mist spray of water after each outing or at the end of a trip. Inox some of the metal parts and she still looks brand new and the drags still works smoothly.
Run 20lb Braid on one spool, and 16lb Mono on the other.
My mates liked my setup so much two of them now have the exact same combos as me now and we all go throwing lures for tailor and Salmon together.
Though when I need longer casts(or chasing Mulloway and Sharks) I go back to my Emblem Pro on my 13ft Loomis and Franklin. But probably too big a reel for a 9ft rod.
I think for $129.00 they are a great reel and on Tailor and Salmon will perform just as well as a more expensive reel would. And when the time comes that it doesn't, i'll probably just buy another.
Daiwa still have them in their 2014 catalogue http://daiwafishing.com.au/emcast-sport/

Unfortunately some of these
Unfortunately some of these reels don't even make it 12 months, you need to remember if fitting 15bl braid it will break around 25bl.Will the main shaft take that stress ?.I had one but sold it before it was worth nothing to me because i could see what was going to happen, the main shaft bends under load and stays bent.I wouldn't go over 15bl mono
The other point is none of these are for heavy duty fishing in extended spools, maybe the shimano ultegra or the saltiga.Anything less and you'll end up selling it on ebay as a spare parts reel.
When buying something for $130-$200 with the name shimano or daiwa it will be cheap and just a budget reel as they charge more just for there name being on it,look for another brand if you want it to last.
Penn have a long spool out in the next 6 months with a decent main shaft for around $150

Thanks for your comments
Thanks for your comments fellas, I've decided on extending my budget at going for a shimano spheros, the stradic is too light, as my rod has the centre of gravity towards to tip, stradic 4000-5000 feel too uneven. I liked the weight of the daiwa emcast and it suited the rod perfectly, but the shimano warranty and the capacity and such of spheros as won the battle in my mind .... So far any ways
