Danny Green might be in a bit of strife ?

Just saw this on Facebook
He's caused quite a commotion, with plenty saying they've reported it to fisheries.

Must be close to the 700mm Dorsal/Interdorsal limit with Danny being 6'1" / 185cm and all ?

Probably not the best idea to post the pic, let alone lie down next to it like this ....

Saw that this morning.

I was more interested where he was fishing to get the barra. He was asking for tips on metro sharks last week.

Another snap for those who like it! We caught it. We will eat it, and share it for many others to enjoy. If u do not eat fish, chicken, meat of any kind, including fast food, etc etc, then blast away but it will b a waste of your time! I couldn't give a rats arse what someone I don't know says about me!!! I love People ripping into others about eating a shark when fair chance their local fish n chip shop served em up shark when they ordered snapper, which is an ocean creature just like a tiger shark. I'm gonna eat this thing n enjoy the heck out of it n compliment it with a frosty one with good company.

Mon, 2013-01-28 19:27

I agree with the headline bit mate - but if you're anywhere near 6ft, measure 700mm up from your kneecap and you'll see it doesn't get anywhere near where that Dorsal fin is starting on his chest ;)

Regs

Mon, 2013-01-28 21:38

Better read the fisheries regs again, the 700 is only for bronze whalers is the way I interpret it. Says nothing about tigers.

Edit, re read the regs and they have included tigers in with whalers and spinners but the size restrictions only apply in the West and South bioregions.

Danny''s pic looks to have been taken in Onslow?

Yep, I saw the Ashburton

Tue, 2013-01-29 17:43

Yep, I saw the Ashburton plates too and was going to bomb the Facebook ranters with a copy of the North Coast bioregion regs - but reckoned the street looked wayy too flash for Onslow.

Then I read further and saw he was asking for advice on how to catch Metro sharks in close so he could take his kid, and wanted recommendations for Cockburn Sound. ( last week on his FB page )

Who knows - for all we know maybe the North-based skipper was down this way and they fished per North Coast regs ?

PS : C'nite - yep, I double checked the regs before posting - didn't want to look like a goose ;)

Tigers

Tue, 2013-01-29 11:04

Tigers come under whalers in the regs Carnarvonite.

Have a look at the bottom of this page http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Species/sharks/Pages/Shark-recreational-fishing.aspx

There used to be a booklet fisheries produced that listed all the species included as whalers including the Tiger Shark. Cant find it online but needed it for the fishing club when the rules came in so I know its around.

shark size limits!

Tue, 2013-01-29 12:32

MEDIUM RISK SPECIES – Whaler shark size limit
Due to overfishing of some whaler shark species, a maximum size limit of 700 mm
(interdorsal fin length) applies to whaler sharks (Family Carcharhinidae) caught in the
West Coast and South Coast Bioregions (see illustration).
This equates to a shark of about 1.8 metres total length. Importantly, sharks larger
than this often have high concentrations of heavy metal compounds (including
mercury) in their flesh and are not suitable for human consumption.
Common whaler sharks caught in the West Coast and South Coast bioregions include:
dusky shark, bronze whaler, sandbar (thickskin) shark, bull shark, spinner shark and
tiger shark, the school sharks n gummies have to be 45cm from 5th gill slit to base of tail!!
So its guna be a close call, fuuny they havent cut the fins or bled it properly to drain the mecury out of him
he guna taste like a thermometer, lol

As from the fisrt of Feb 2013, Sharks are in the Large Pelagic Finfish group = 3 x Pelagics Per Fisher .

I cant find any info about Gummy size limits in the new rules only the above mentioned 700mm Whaler size . ( which i think they need to review , there is definately no shortage of large Whaler species out there . )

Personal experience.....Tiger shark is tough and the bigger you go the worse it gets.. Hammerheads are the best eating shark I've ever caught and ate. Because Danny is a celebrity he's an easy target. If it was one of us a word wouldn't be mentioned, no mileage. Tell em to F^%&*k off Danny.

Tue, 2013-01-29 17:41

Seriously ?

Whenever there's a mention of someone taking illegal fish on here you can guarantee a few pages of responses, whether it's a FW member or not.

Plus most of us here know better - and I can't remember the last time I saw someone posting a pic of a big shark that wasn't released.

....and nearly all of the big shark catches finish up with a comment saying how stoked they were to see it swim off successfully.

I was in DG's corner ('scuse the pun) when I saw the Ashburton plate, but when it became clear this was a metro shark things changed a bit.

The more I look at it, the more I think it was a clueless waste of a good 2m+ Tiger - Oversize, tough as old boots, unbled, contaminated... why ???

Fair enough, he says they're going to eat it but I reckon by the time he is educated by some of the (rational) comments he's getting and reads the fishing regs he might rethink feeding it to his family.

If he was a nobody named Hu Flung Dung you can guarantee he'd be copping an absolute flogging on here whether it was an oversize shark or 10cm Snapper, so why should "celebrity" DG be off limits ?

Legal catch

Tue, 2013-01-29 17:52

It's a legal catch and he's stated he's going to eat it.

Not a huge shark by any means, probably the equivalent of a 5kg red emperor in the grand scheme of things.

Anglers shouldn't need to apologise to the hand wringing brigade for undertaking their rapidly diminishing legal pastime and legally capturing a target species. They can GAGF I reckon.

Good on him.
