Dawsville Cut

Went down to dawsville at about 3pm and wasnt catching much so i asked the tackle shop owner whats being caught in the cut and he told me that 40+cm skippy are being caught constantly, so i changed my rig and had a go and within 5 minutes i had one on, bloody thing went straight for the rocks and got itself stuck so i gave it some slack and it came out and it measured 30cm. casted out again and within a minute i was on again, and it felt massive id say it was fighting about three times as hard as the 30cm! saw a big flash of light go under the rocks and it was stuck =( waited about 5 minutes letting out line to see if it would come out but the actual line was snagged around a rock. end of the day we only got 1 30cm tarwhine and a 30cm skippy. didnt get any pics.

Literally just lock your drag up as tight as it goes and skull drag them away from the rocks. If you give them any line near structure they will just reef you.

Usually use at least 10-12lb flurocarbon leader, but if you're getting smoked then you can up it to 20lb or so.

What lb line you using? If you are only using 6lb mono or something you might want to up it a little bit, so you've got a bit more stopping power.

 6lb is more than enough

Sun, 2011-11-13 11:00

6lb is more than enough mate! I run 4lb with a 10lb leader and get most of my fish in!

Oh lol. Not sure what that

Mon, 2011-11-14 09:01

Oh lol. Not sure what that breaks at, haven't used it. The reason I ask is because mot braids/fused lines like fireline, microfuse, bass hard etc, break well above their rated, so 4lb braid, is actually 8-10lb in most cases.

It's just that I see quite a few people there at the cut using the jarvis walker combos that come spooled up with like 6lb mono, that just stretches ridiculously, and has no stopping power, whihc is fine for herring and whiting, but the skippy just reef you straight away with it because you can't put any pressure on them.

4-6lb braid is fine though. Personally I normally use 8lb, but if i get smoked and frustrated i whip out the pe1 18lb haha

 just keep them away. Direct

Sat, 2011-11-12 16:09

just keep them away. Direct them into an area that they are less likely to ping you on. Put a lot of pressure on when they dive. dont let them get that extrra 20cm or youve lost em. Lost a fair few myself,. because theyve taken off at the last moment and taken me by suprise.

Can you get those big Skippy

Sat, 2011-11-19 10:09

Can you get those big Skippy anywhere in the cut or are they just hanging around the Cafe jetties?  Thinking about giving the beach a miss this weekend and chase some light line Skippy fun.
