deep drop last Sunday

couple of fish from last sunday quick run out for deep drop put on brag board instead of reports. full report under that article.

Alan James: As promised another photo bigger fish is dark on one side but crap photo im sure it was a larger version of smaller Harpuku, once i took a fillet of him and his mouth closed up bottom jaw sticks way out like other Harpuka. Like you i thought maybe Bass groper but on refelection i did think big Harpuka went 46 kg didnt weigh the small one. cheers humpback.

ps// thanks to ryan and his boys from oceanside tackle his off the shelf rig stood up well.

photos not working sorry !!!

Try again with photo Alan: fish did have a colour change at top bit hard to see as its in the shade ?? like you not 100% on Species ??

Yes its a solid patternoster rig we make up and the left fish is a Hapuku and the right is a bass groper.

Surely they are the same species. All the fins and bottom jaw identical. But Iam no good at species identifying

Hapuku

Mon, 2016-01-11 21:39

I did the Same t bone even cut the fish open insides also the same. You cant really tell by the shade but as i said before dark stripe all down top side of fish same as other Hapuku just faded abit as its got older. I have caught base groper before, there eye seams a bit bigger to me. I do have other photos but cant work out how to post as resolution to high but with his mouth closed bottom jaw way longer than ive sean on Bass. IMO i think its a hapuku.

Also did a taste test couldnt taste difference so all good. Daughter and boyfreind happy with 1st attempt at deep drop either way.

tight lines regards humpback.

Left HapukaRight Bass

Left Hapuka

Right Bass Grouper....

The puka has a different head shape, the distinct dark colouration line and bass are way fatter with puka being longer and slender..

Trust me seen plenty of them in the shallows of nz!
