Deep jigging cod
Submitted by southcity104 on Sun, 2011-05-29 07:20
Great trip again out wide over the shelf! The red snapper were like flies and hard to get through them to the cod. 400 gram jigs were suitable on pe6 saltiga boat braid. anyways enjoy

Yeah pesky reds!
Yeah pesky reds!
They were all over the jigs, but no idea how to get the cods instead. Tony's puka was a jigged red we left down, that got monstered by the puka and fortunately found the hook. You can see in one pic that the mono leader in the mouth of the red and then out to the jig in the mouth of the puka, but when it came up they were both between the assist hook and the jig.
Unfortunately when I tried the same thing and all I got back was a very badly munched up red.
We had a big trophy blue with anita or something written on the cab, drop into our drift line not once but twice. The first time, we were way off the fish, so it was actually really pretty funny. We later reset to a different drift a little way off, and they followed us over. Pretty damn cheeky.

wonder what would happen if you rigged your jigs with a big hook hung off the bottom as well as the assist from top when getting swamped by reds??

Wondering what line you use,
Wondering what line you use, I got saltiga PE6 on two of my rods but they are only 300m will that be enough if i'm fishing 200m? Just wondering if they peel line off you at that depth. Either way would be a hard crank so top effort guys, makes me want go give it a go next time the weather looks good.

we're using overheads bean
with plenty of capacity. Bulk spools of braid is the way to go. You could cats paw two spools but i wouldnt bother. You would want a mininun of 350 meters in the 200's. i am running 500 plus in hope oneday of getting connected to mr sword fish!

Tony is using a Furuno FCV585 with the MB1100 and two 2kW primary transducers, a separate 50 and 200kHz. I forget the models, but they look like rubber coated pineapple tins.
