Determine service life of manifolds and risers
I was recently on a trip to the Abrolhos and my engine over heated. Turned out is was due to blocked water passages in the risers. I took them off and soaked in acid which cleared the blockage but also removed a lot of flaky material as well. Through my research it seems that the manifolds and risers are pretty much consumable and fail with relatively little warning signs resulting in major engine damage. AS a result I am almost to the point of replacing the manifolds and risers with these (http://www.hitekmarine.com.au/). However, before I bite the bullet I thought I would ask if anyone one here knows if there is a more “scientific” approach to determine if the manifolds and risers really need replacing. For info the engine in questions is a Mercruiser 5.0L MPI with dry joint exhausts

not sure about a scientific approach
but i take my manifolds of every two years and clean the ports! i too have been looking at those manifolds from hitek as they look the shizzle! so when mine finally die i will be putting those on! then there will be no need to worry

Cheers Snappermiles.
Cheers Snappermiles. I was wonder if people can see if they are alright with out having to remove and inspect them (e.g. temp, drill and tap inspection etc.). I don't really want to be replacing the $250 worth of gaskets every inspection.

they probably could
but i bet they dont as thats alot of money they lose out on! i see it this way 250 dollars isnt much compared to a blown motor! and you shouldnt need to inspect them very often! 2 yearly as long as you give the motor a good flush out!
