I like the look of that and the specs. Must be a bit pricey though.

Anyone know the price? I

Anyone know the price? I also like the look of that.. I'll be in the market for a big spinner once I've bought my overhead for bottom bouncing. One of those would be awesome for casting applications.

Only has 4 Double-shielded

Only has 4 Double-shielded stainless steel bearings. Not very many when compared with the likes of Stella and Saltiga.

My gear is all relatively cheap compared to what I could be fishing with. I tend to spend big however on quality terminal gear and quality bait as that is what catches the fish not the rod and reel. I can picture KC and Honsu reaching for their keyboards to tell me that in terms of "BIG FISH" there is no second chances and you need the best possible equipment to stop a fast running fish. To that I agree totally and feel extremely undergunned whenever I get a big pelagic on my gear. Having said that I have stopped plenty of big fish on my little outfits and an experienced angler can still out play a fast running fish as long as he/she knows his/her gear's limitations.

It goes without saying that I agree that there is no way I could stop a 200kg blue marlin with a little egg beater or my Penn 321LH. Horses for coarses and if you are into "extreme angling" then you are probably going to need "extreme tackle", which legitimises a lot of the high end gear available today.

Nothing wrong with the gear, and I would love to own one of each, but since I don't fish "extreme" I am very comfortable fishing with a light graphite frame reel on a moderately priced rod that is well matched to the type of fishing I do most of. Until I win lotto I will probably stick to the sub $500 combo's (rod/reel) and only splash out if a hot looking left hand wind lever drag overhead comes on the market, that's light enough to fish all day and tough enough to put some serious hurt on a rampaging Spaniard/YFT/Sambo.

Wise words

I'm with you Andy. I've got 2 Shimano TSS4 5.8:1 spinning reels. One is 15 years old, the other is a couple of years old. I've thrashed them both on big pelagic fish -GT's, Yellowfin, Dogtooth, with a 45kg Sailfish from a stationary boat probably being the best on that reel. You can pick up a new one for about $130.....Sure, it does look dated up against some of the latest gear....but it works, it's tough, it's reliable, and I would rather spend my hard earned surplus cash getting onto fish rather than looking at a bunch of shiny toys in my garage....Still if my wife cuts up her credit card, and I send my 2 and 5 yr old out to work.......naaa...I'd just go on more hell trips...how fast does a 800lb marlin have to go before it melts my TLD25?

no no andy, i still lose big

Tue, 2007-01-23 01:36

no no andy, i still lose big fish on my gear. can be frustrating, but gear only goes so far; before experience, skill and luck take over. helps keep you on your toes. since i lack 2 out of that 3, and luck varies, i need someway to make up for it =S

as for the lever drag, i have suggested an accurate before, and now own one. im happy to show it too you if you would like to take a look or feel? (in exchange for putting up with my sense of humour on these forums =p in life im actually a weak soft boy) unfortunately I couldn't be stuffed waiting or paying just slightly more and got over it and bought the right hand wind. mind over matter, and practice. not to say i still find it a bit awkward and cut myself with the braid every now and then (angler error). but i do land fish and relatively comfortably too.

as for the TSS4... i believe they were one THE spinning reels to use for GT popping before the Stella and Saltigas came out, so a bit of pedigree there.

as for 1000$ rod and reel... try 2000AUD plus. maybe around the 1300 mark. depends on your contacts and who you buy a couple of beers for. free would be better though. some people push the 2500AUD and over mark; now thats a bit intense. and thats just jigging or popping. i'm not touching price tags on marlin outfits.

juuuuuuuuuuust teasin ;) i still take the piss out of 1500 AUD bream combos =P =P whaaaat i'm not the only one =P
remember though, as a certain captain says, all gear breaks, even 2000+AUD combos, but c'est la vie. probably stab the fish to death if i land it, have a bit for dinner and feed the rest to the dog or make fertiliser, have a whinge and then go out and replace it.

JUST KIDDING =P =P =P sorry one of those days =P but makes for a good read dunnit?

GOOD REELS

Tue, 2007-12-25 17:48

Al's got the whole set of the offshore reels from little brim size up to jigging reels , there tuff allright , not Van Stall tuff but tuff .

BTW they have been used for jigging, and still going strong.

The 4000 size would be perfect for popper fishin' for Tailor and even Mulla's , I'm borrowing a couple to take to the Wangler big day out at Quobba so anyone up there that week end can check them out and some other bling stuff I will be bringing .
