Dhu hooks

Hi guys, just wondering what hooks you use for dhufish. We usually use big red 7o but want to know if anyone uses circle hooks. I've seen Paul from ifish using them and he reckons they are the go.

Cheers, Charlie.

Not bent one yet!

nothing fancy

I generally just use a 6/0 or 7/0 single mustad tarpon with pretty good success. If I have a rod in the holder that is left unattended I'll use circle hooks as the dhuey's hook themselves with them.

Either but different

Fri, 2014-01-17 11:07

I use black magic KL 7/0 at the moment, but like Gamakatsu Octopus ones too.

I have also had plenty of success with Gamakatsu circles, but with circle hooks you don't strike, you let the fish hook themselves and usually get the fish in the corner of the mouth so release better, but have to be more patient not striking.

Both catch a similar amount of fish.

 Yep the Gamakatsu circle

Fri, 2014-01-17 13:28

Yep the Gamakatsu circle hooks are crap. Have snapped and straightened too many now to use them again. Use to be a good hook but they have changed in the last couple of years.

I now use Owner circles.

Broken gamakatsu

Sat, 2014-01-18 07:46

Ah I knew I should have asked this question ages ago, I've broken a few gamas mainly in the smaller circle sizes but prior to this never had a problem .

Ive also switched over to the hd live bait circles with no problems but as Bodie mentioned damn there gettin expensive in big sizes .

Owner for sure

Sat, 2014-01-18 09:56

snapped both gamamgatsu hooks in a patenoster rig up in coral bay on something decent  same drop as a 9.5kg red so it got me wondering if they coulda been bigger

Now ive swapped to owner 9/0 ssw circles after ive seen how well they permorfed on a mates boat and have not had an issue with them since!!

 As mentioned on another post

Sun, 2014-01-19 19:16

As mentioned on another post I use 8/0-9/0 hoodlums, perfect for Dhuies and small enough for finicky Baldies too. Up north nothing but 10/0 circles with the offset barbs as recommended by Snappermiles. Never looked back after using them. I straightened a 9/0 Gamkatsu out on the red in my avatar, so that was nearly a lost fish.

best iv done is 12.5kg red.
they are almost a circle hook and seem to hook the corner of the mouth reliably.

Gamma circles for me

Mon, 2014-01-20 06:47

Just wish I could get some smaller versions (2/0's) as we often fish ground with both good dhuies and stonker KGW and on skinned occy, even big tentacles, you can catch both with the hook size being the limiting factor (too big and it simply wont go into a KGW's mouth) - tried some small gladiators but you can see how they faired in the reports section - almost straight and I fish light rods and set reel clutches really light and have soft hands and they still almost straightened so in the bin they go !

Snapped & straightened

Mon, 2014-01-20 09:06

Snapped & straightened gamakatsu's, they are shithouse. Interesting comment about fishing them too hard, for the money you pay why not expect quality? Why not fish them hard especially if it's heavy terrain? For the record I have also done them in on lighter gear with less drag.

Votes for the Tanaiwas & Owner's, pop in & see the boys Charlie they have a good selection of hooks in

Gamas

Mon, 2014-01-20 20:07

Yep I'm with lamby shit hooks, if you can break them on light gear and therefore you have to run light drags then the quality isn't there !

ive used the owners before but not everyone keeps them in stock

Down here havent made up my mind yet. Have a few gamas, hoodlums and Owners various sizes left.

Tue, 2014-01-21 16:53

as far as strength goes the mustad beaks MT point  i've found are great cheap, sharp, strong. I mainly use 4/0 during the day bottom bashin at rotto still a chance on the smaller species but hold up if you hook a big dhu no problem, my mate landed a 7-8ft nurse on a snapper rig belive it or not and while slightly out of shape pretty good for a 4/0. I also use the 8/0 when the big kingies come out to play with a locked tld 50 with 80lb mono, double thumbs and done the job time and time again.

I also like the bent eye on the beak or occy hooks for bottom bashin.  For dhus and circles are a must i recon if you plan on dropping a bait down and leavin it in the holder while you spin lures or flick baits, but i find it hard not to strike if its in my hand takes a bit of gettin use to

I have just moved to OWNERS, they are pricey but they do the job. I've pulled in some big Sambo's with them and never had an issue. Good tip on the Alibaba site, there is some decent stuff there.
