First Pic post for me, This

Wed, 2012-09-26 09:16

First Pic post for me, This is a shot of a school of Dhu ,biggest from this school went 19.8kg,the 1 in the pic went around 14kg.The school was there for over 8 months. The last time i fished it all we caught was black tip whalers. Also picked up some great KG's and Flatties from the outer edges of the lump.Used Ryans drift rig to great effect once the became a little skittish.

Drift rig is basic ,2 snelled

Wed, 2012-09-26 10:31

Drift rig is basic ,2 snelled 8 o big guns to a 120 pnd leader with a running sinker on the leader.Let it hit he bottom and then gradually let more line out as you drift so it sits about a mtr of the bottom.Have found that the patternoster rigs will go through the mark and if fish are a bit flighty they will be more inclined to hit the drift rig it as it comes through a bit after all your bottom rigs have left the scene so to speak.Has worked in most conditions except a no drift day.

Quick question?

Over 8 months how many times do you think you hit that spot?

I would have hit that spot

Wed, 2012-09-26 16:27

I would have hit that spot around half a dozen times. It turned into a back up spot to hit on the way home if we hadnt caught anything at my deeper spots.Everytime we left there were fish still on the chew, threw heaps back.Turned up one day and it had sharks all over it and no more Dhuies. Did take my old man out there tho he is a non fisho and doesnt like boats ,biggest fish he had ever caught was a herring(he is 72) didnt want to spend a long time in the boat so went out caught a couple around 10 ,12 kg and straight back in he was stoked.

Wed, 2012-09-26 20:01

Ahhh backup spots, just gotta love them, got plenty of them that are a sure to put a bend in the rod incase exploring doesn't pan out.  Looks like a nice little lump in the middle of nowhere ground, keep that one quiet!

Fine Line

Thu, 2012-09-27 09:02

Yeah it is a fine line between picking a few fish off a lump and destroying a good spot through too much fishing.  That looks like a good area to really look after as it is not  obvious and the chance of anyone else stumbling over it is pretty remote. You could travel over that on the way out and there is no way you would pick it up.

I found an area that was loaded with dhuies Real subtle bit of bottom. It must not have been fished for years as it was holding a lot of  big fish. It turned into our back up spot, and a place to hone our jigging and soft plastic skills, a place to take the father-in-law when all else failed. We first fished that back in 07, and probably since about twice a year. Although most of the fish were released, and a lot of those were 10 -17kg fish,  I noticed that although the area still held a lot of fish, the fish we caught were getting smaller, and mostly female.

I took  that spot out of my GPS to remove the temptation. It has been nearly 12 months since we last went there. I will give it another year or so and see what we catch. Besides after the initial euphoria of finding a good spot, it does become a little like shooting fish in a barrel and you get lazy.

If a pro had found that back in the day they would have ripped 100 dhuies of it in an afternoon and moved on.

Fish are funny creatures Willow. We fished the spot I refer to one morning and caught some good fish before they went off the bite and small  sharks moved in. That after noon on the way home we dropped past again and had 3 double hook ups on the first and only drift we had. Give your spot a good rest and you will probably find it will bounce back.

Yeah thats the plan.Ive been

Thu, 2012-09-27 10:42

Yeah thats the plan.Ive been back for a look and its still holding fish although not as big a school, havent fished it for 6 months will give it a go in another 3 -4 months.Down here in Bunno that is a big feature unless you head out a bit deeper. You are right found it on the way to another spot a few years ago while trolling otherwise prob would never have found it. A few months ago i found another Dhuie spot on the same kind of bottom but out in 40mtrs,about an hours steam from the ramp, and it is loaded with fish, went with a mate to this 1 and he pulled a 42 pnd Dhuie of it (waiting for him to send me a pic) we got a few around 12 to 15 kg but its a fair way out and conditions have to be good. Just goes to show that you dont have to be on huge ledges etc to get a fish.
