Just call him Hoppy .......... roled his ankle yesterday and out there today, dancing around the deck on one leg, in very snotty conditions.

Didn't affect the catch rate but

Nice Dhuie

Don't use up all the luck too early, you need to peak at the end of March.

Can't complain with a fish like that. I thought Monday was going to be a bit lumpy out there so stuck to the beach. I know...I'm a wuss these days.

well done mate, good fish!!!

we were up at two rocks last week, only managed to land 3 dhus (all sized, one back on the release weight!) but suspect we lost a couple larger specimens on the way up.

Had our bag in 2 drifts with some nice pinkys and a couple baldies ont he same ground! Nice new lump we found

Could still see some more dhuies on the sounder under the ledges too.

i am hoping the wind goes away as well Paul

Should get a few tags in the by catch on the way to a feed as well.I dont like your chances of the fish travelling to far though.

Im talking 5sq miles .I would think they move like cattle and follow the food ,Ocys, bait balls, crays move the ocies follow and the fish aint far behind. Time will tell if they say in the same areas and patches then shit there is a frigging lot of dhuies around some of the ground. eg hundreds.

even 5 miles would be a good move.

It will be interesting to see if the results are the same this time around as the last lot.Either way it goes we will have a better idea of the big picture. The same old line will be wheeled out and dusted off."You are to good at handling and releasing fish so there for it doesnt give an accurate picture of the fishery"What do they think the general fishing public do with an undersize fish?Do they think they drag them on the boat drop them from a meter up,then kick them around the deck for a couple of minutes before letting them go?This round may have less taggers but it will be more refined in the results.I will send you a pm in a sec as well Paul.

One other possibility is the

Tue, 2012-01-03 18:44

One other possibility is the survival rate of released dhu fish is lower than everyone thinks.

We tried to release a 91 cm dhu last week, after bringing it up very slowly, and despite a fair attempt, it died (too much stress I suspect). An 81 cm went back without release weight very strongly but it does make you wonder how many die?????

From this, I now limit the amount of dhuies we catch and release and go to different species if we have caught a few.

I think you may find the opposite is true John

Tue, 2012-01-03 18:55

The other thing to think of is a 91 cm dhu depending on how green its pasture is may be getting on a bit.No different to a middle age guy having a heartattack while on the job and after a dose of viagra.I have always and will always move on after a couple of by catches. We only tag by catch fish as well and when the dhu bag limit is on the boat we move to other grounds.(ofcourse you still catch the odd one but it is limited)Except the odd time we have always had a 1 dhu per person limit since well before the new limits came in.If you dont mind me asking what depth did the 2 fish come from?

No super kit glove handling

Tue, 2012-01-03 18:51

No super kit glove handling just bring them up slow in the boat measured and back in the drink .not rocket science .I think the biggest disadvantage ,is fishers will still bring them up to quick..if they are on the fish and there on the bite get them up quick and let's get back down for one more..in saying that I think most people are doing the right thing and going by the numbers of fish I have seen in the last eight months ,numbers are on the rise.

I agree mate

Tue, 2012-01-03 18:59

On the most part i think the message has filtered through.I also agree that some get caught up in the moment and get a tad excited.

Totally agree, pulling them

Tue, 2012-01-03 18:59

Totally agree, pulling them up quick will kill em quick smart, and a slow retrieve, particularly with undersized pups is critical. We have been letting the small ones swim around for a few minutes at depth once you first get colour before bringing them up, basically allowing them to equalize with a bit if pressure, and except for the big girl, release weight have not been necessary from 40 m.

Yes a good idea leaving them

Tue, 2012-01-03 20:23

Yes a good idea leaving them under the boat.you will see the air escaping .I have found if the fish has been going hard ,best to get it on the release weight as soon as possible ,and back to the bottom. But as said only one in six need the weight. As for the big girl they usually end up with a hole in the head.
