Did some Shark / Ray Fishing over Xmas in South Africa, Western Cape.

Hi Guys;

Just came back from holiday out in South Africa. Got some time to wet the lines and have some back breaking fun.

Spend most of my time around the Western Cape targeting Shad (Tailor) and Bronzies, Spotties and Smoothhound Sharks on the reefs. Macassar and Monwabisi around the Western Cape seemed to be the place for sharks. Caught a nice size Cob (Mulloway) 58cm and got completly smashed by the Smoothhound Sharks out on the Strand Reefs. We kitted out in our wetsuits and move from reef to reef untill we were about 200mt off shore in about 6 ft of water. Got out onto a reef that got us out of the water, however everytime I cast I got hammered and pulled twice into the water by the smoothies. Three smoothies caught by my mates and a unforgettable day at that.

I added a photo of Harolds Bay, me sitting high up the rocks awaiting huge Black Rays / Ragged tooth Shark pick ups. Second a pic of the throw baits I made use of for the rays.

Hope you enjoy these.

(To the Shark Fishing Group Perth - as soon as my container lands with my shark gear I will join you guys. )

Till then

Cheers

Hi Rig; the angle of the photo is the culprit here; not too far; about 10mt; we always fish in a group of 3 on the mountainsides. If one is on; the other two reel in and assist with landing, tag and release.

Hi John, when targeting rays

Mon, 2011-01-17 15:41

Hi John, when targeting rays / skates I only use 1 x hook Normally size 6 - 10 Daici hooks, with about 70cm red blood wireline. Cast that in about a 100mt, then hold on.

I only use 2 x hook traces when targeting sharks. Waiting for my container with all my gear to arrive; will take photos of that to show you.

Cheers for now.

John
