Diver with the bends

On Sunday got an urgent call from a diver advising his buddy was suffering chest pains after a second dive 5nm of Hillarys. Went out at speed took 10 minutes to get there. When we arrived he had lost use of his legs and was in a serious condition. Once onboard stabilised him and made it back to Hillarys to waiting ambulance, travel time 8 minutes. Had to travel through Hillarys at speed. Thanks to all the vessels coming out who got out the way.

Ambo's worked on him for 30 minutes before taking him to Freo and the Hyperbaric (spelling?) chamber.

Called to hospital yesterday who advised he was out of the chamber and in a stable condition.

It was a great outcome. The Fast Response Naiad showed its worth. Overall a busy day Sunday and did not get home until 9.00pm

you are correct

Tue, 2012-03-20 11:34

When we got out there we left him with the boat and sent our other vessel to assist. he ahd no idea what to doThey also had to come back at speeed as the ambo's needed the diver computer for the deco session at fremantle.

A good lesson there. If you are taking someone out in your boat make sure they know how to operate the vessel and a also the radio. he did a good jobs of giving us the waypoints so we could locaye them quickly.

Good job

Tue, 2012-03-20 12:15

A good job well done.

What speed does your big Naiad do? Our 10 metre one is flat out at 47 knots BUT when commissioned they had it up to 58 and we have since found out what was done to slow it down.

I have done a high speed run out of the harbour and dread the day that I may have to do one coming in, not something that one wants to consider.

Top Speed

Tue, 2012-03-20 12:31

Topped it out at 47knots on the way back. Was doing 6500 rev with full trim. had 5 onboard included the diver. Our is 11.3 mtrs and weights 6 ton. 350hp V8's were working overtime. very impressed with the handling at that speed. Mind you had a look at the fuel usage, was up to 275ltrs per hour in total.

Dropped speed to 30 knots coming into Hillarys due to traffic.

Each boat duty we spend 5-10 minutes practising at high speed.

Slow down

Tue, 2012-03-20 21:12

They dropped the outboards down a couple of inches so next time we have to lift it out of the water we will check it out.

Props

Wed, 2012-03-21 07:27

One of the things they do is chnage the props. I believe FESA request reduction in max speed for safety reasons.

We were advised out vessel could exceed 55knots but were happy for it ti be reduced to 47knots. Conditions need to be perfect to do that speed anyway.

Have been on a naiad doing 55knots and it's scary.

No wonder they are thirsty, creates a shitload of drag dropping 2 holes. They would be better lifted up where they belong and trusting the skippers right hand a bit more I reckon.

Cheated

We were the first group to fit auto pilot to our 10 metre Naiad and its truly a labour saver in up to 2 metre seas at anything under 30 knots, calm water its good for 35--38 without a worry.

Flat chat at 47 knots it chews around 230 litres an hour and with the motors lifted wouldn't expect it to change all that much.

Thu, 2012-03-22 07:54

Both times was told they had enough people and also due to my fly in fly out roster thanks but no thanks, I find it strange considering I work 4 weeks on 4 weeks off, I'm basically available half the year.

Thu, 2012-03-22 05:31

people can never show enough apreciation for the job the rescue guys and girls do weather it be out on the boat or on the radio. it is good to know that there are people out there that do realy care enough to give up their own time to help others when needed. for the boating community their blood is worth bottling. well done guys on the fast rescue. dont think i would like to go out at speed in those conditions

well done boys, that Niad is worth it's wait in gold

too many divers these days think the bends is what the old guys got years ago and with diver computers you safe.

this is the third case of a recreational diver getting the bends I'm aware of this year.

Glad he is safe and well.

Tony, I spent nearly 20 hours

Fri, 2012-03-23 01:06

Tony, I spent nearly 20 hours in the chamber 2 weeks ago after a mild case of DCS, there were 3 other divers in there over those days with me at varying stages of recovery, and talking to the dr's there seems to be someone every weekend heading in there for treatment.

The good news for me was that my case was nothing like this guys, I had headaches and aching joints and body. Out of the water for 6-8 weeks though, and even worse no beer for 2 weeks!!!

yah as the son of a naval

Fri, 2012-03-23 06:33

yah as the son of a naval diver and someone that did mixed gas prepwork for ultra deep divers like Scheck Eckle and Nuno Gomez, you see micro bends simptons quite often.

But rec divers should not be geeting the bends ever, it is a risk for commercials and ultra deep sport divers, but should never be seen in the rec divers that are not exceeding 45m.

your deco stops can never be too long!, too many guys are in too much of a hurry to get back in that boat.

take it safe guys, play nicely with your bubbles!
