DIY landbased burley bucket

I had most of the materials lying around and thought it might come in handy for a Dunsborough salmon day trip we had planned.

Version 1: worked well but the end caps were hard to get off and ended up losing one late in the day.  Definitely worked though as the school was out of casting range for a while until this was used. Like magic, the school made a b-line for the shore and the entire beach was hooked up!  Awesome :)

So after the first outing's learnings, this is how it looks now.   Went and bought a screw-on cap and threaded the rope through the top and out the bottom cap. This way I wont lose the caps if one does pop off.  Not that it should because i used glue too.

Has anyone done something similar?  Is there anything I could of done differently?

Screwcaps

Will fill with sand and hard to remove if they roll on the surf. Did one very similar but next time I would make it smaller as it took heaps to fill. They are effective though good job

If the screw cap is hard to

If the screw cap is hard to get off use something like a surveyors peg and wedge it between the lugs on the cap and they come off pretty easy. You can see the three lugs in the photo.

Thanks mate. The pop cap was near impossible to take off so hopefully the screw cap is easier.

How big was your last one? This pipe is 90mm and about 25cm tall.  I wanted it to be big enough to fit frames and herring/tailor heads in.

I have had the same issue

Wed, 2015-05-06 04:17

I have had the same issue nightfish described with screwcap threads filling with sand and getting quite stuck. My screwcap didn't have the "lugs" on top, but I found getting a strong enough grip on the pipe was harder than the increasing torque on the cap. Two strap wrenches would do the job, but a push-on cap seems easier-just use a piece of wood to tap it off if it gets stuck.

I've made one similar for out in boat.... Don't have the sand problem. If i did I,would use a push cap and put 3 screws around the side to hold it in place then  unscrew and remove when you need a refill

I've made similar ones but

I've made similar ones but with two crucial differences. First, put screw caps on both ends. This makes cleaning a lot easier.
Second put two 50mm galvanised bolts through the top of one of the lids on opposite sides of the lid to serve as lugs when the lid is difficult to get off. Just use a tent peg, screwdriver or whatever to serve as a lever. It pays to put two nuts on each bolt, one inside the lid & one on the outside so the lid is sandwiched between the nuts & doesn't crack when a lot of pressure is put on the lugs. Shove a second screwdriver or stick through a couple of holes in the bucket to apply more torque.

 Thanks for the feedback

Thanks for the feedback fellas.   The extra bolts as lugs is a good idea.

Almost finished a diy rod tube too so i'll share that with y'all when it's done :)
