1. West Coast Fishing guide: Netting in the Swan.

Page 17

Prawns
Swan and Canning Rivers – Closed to prawn hand trawls from
1 August to 31 October.
Murray and Serpentine Rivers, Yunderup Canals – Closed to
prawning 1 July to 30 November.

On page 9 it deals with prawns and if you look at the legend down the bottom it shows that it would be highlighted in green if you required a licence. You only need an RBFL if dab netting from a boat.

2. There is a netting brochure to go with the netting licence, but prawn drag nets are not even close to the types of nets described in the brochure.

3. 3 phone calls with Fisheries playing Phone footy lead to messages left for "compliance officers" who were supposedly out on duty. Never received a response.

The bag limit is 9 litres per person per day, return all blowies back to the water, and crabs also as the net does not comply.

In Western Australia you may not catch crabs by using:
• Crab traps, pots or any dilly nets which trap or entangle
the catch; or
• Fishing or prawning nets.

Page 24

Fishing for prawns
(FRMR Part 4, Division 6, Reg.39)
You may only catch prawns by the following methods:
• Single hand dip net or single hand scoop net.
• Single prawn hand-trawl (drag) net. Nets must not be more
than four metres long with a mesh of not less than 16 mm,
and must not be attached to a boat or set.

As best as I can tell its fair game.

Enjoy.

You can drag for prawns

You can drag for prawns everywhere apart from the marine sanctuaries ( pelican point and  along the como flats )

Areas closed to prawn hand-trawls

You may not use or leave unattended a prawn hand trawl net in:
• the Harvey Estuary and its tributaries;
• the Peel inlet and its tributaries;
• the Channel Entrance to the Peel Inlet;
• the Dawesville Cut;
• the Leschenault Estuary;
• the Swan River within 100 metres of any part of the Pelican
Point Nature Reserve; or within 100 metres of the Milyu
Nature Reserve.

I gave it a go a few weeks back but it's so inefficient these days. Takes too long to sort out the bycatch with blowies, weed, crabs , baitfish and even sea horses.

I found it easier to torch and dab net them.
