Drag Settings

Question for the game fishermen
Have just got 2 outfits that are new to me, bought them 2nd hand
Reels are Tiagra 30WLRS mounted on Calstar acid wrapped rods, reels have about 700m of 80lb Jerry Brown hollowcore, and a mono topshot of 80lb Momoi mono. now just wondering what would be the right drag setting for strike, at the moment it's only 3.5kg. The 1 third rule would take me to just over 12kg, but I'm keeping in mind it is a 30 class reel.
So what you set the strike drag at ?
Will be out on the trench Tuesday if the weather holds out dragging lures for a stickface

Interesting question, but I'd
Interesting question, but I'd favour 12kg 3.5kg, because for starters you will get spooled!
Really isn't the point of braid backing to give you extra capacity because modern reels can hack so much more drag than older ones?
The tiagra is only rated to 12kg, so you might just have to settle for rubnning as high as you can, without it being sticky.
PS: sorry for the excessive geeking, but 80lb jb hollow has a hideous breaking strain, even higher than the 100lb oddly enough. Its not a good choice if you want extra capacity, much better going with JB 100lb in that case ;)

personally
I would go 10kg at strike, troll with them set a bit under this, so that you have a bit extra past strike. But thats just my opinion!!

another question.....
Whats the rod you are running?? 24kg or 37kg rod??
And lastly, the drag setting is straight from the reel or through the rod??
Should always set your drag through a loaded rod. At the end of the day that's how you fish....with the rod, not just winch.

30WLRS is still only a 15 kg
30WLRS is still only a 15 kg reel so 5kg of drag pressure at strike. but if you want to have a go at the marlin hanging around down south at the moment you have wasted your money buying gear that is not suitable for the fish you are likely to encounter. Hope you are ready to respool the reel after the 1st encounter. Good luck

Sort of. People do fish them
Sort of.
People do fish them as deepwater bottom bashers with heavy braid and Shimano rate them to a max drag of 15kg.
It certainly isn't doing it "by the book", but if you used a thinner braid, you could get your line cap up to something half decent and try what he is doing.
Using the TI30WLRSA is really pushing it though ...

Till, lots f fish down there
Till, lots of fish down there already lost because people are compromising on their gear.
Most of the fish there will be big and with anglers that most likely don't know what they are doing or how to drive the boat properly to make it easier on the angler have little or no hope of pulling one of these fish. To go in with light gear is just a waste of time but good for the fish.

Probably right, running a 30W
Probably right, running a 30W as an 80W, ie; jumping two classes might be pushing it.

My bet is a lot of good fish will be lost
toward the end of the fight and a few fish that get worn down to far will die anyway.Driving a boat to catch a dhu is a lot different to a marlin.I think a lot of folks will be trying to fight their fish straight up and downIt can be done on littler reels ect but it means the crew and skipper have far more to do with the capture than the reel jockey

Anything less that 37kg is a
Anything less that 37kg is a waste of time and the skipper needs to be on their game. 200KG fish should come in in less than 2 hrs otherwise you hurt the fish and the angler.

Thanks
OK this gear was not bought for chasing the billies out from here, but they are here and maybe it's not the right option, but will go out looking anyway...
Mainly bought them as I'm going to spend time offshore cubing for some of the bigger tuna that pass us by.
So my question really was only to ask people for their opinion on what would be a suitable drag setting.....
If out there looking for Tuna and a billie puts it head up, then yes the gear may well fall short, and I have never hooked a billfish, so the odds are stacked well in favour of the fish.
Drag setting tested over the loaded rod and rod is rated 50-80lb

It can be done and has been done before Rick
but as stated you need a crew that is on the ball in all aspects of the fight the tagging and tracing ect.You will also need a skipper that can read the situation and react i less than a spit second. You will still lose fish but not as many. The other thing is the set up of the vessel. How fast can i go in reverse without digging under? How fast it can turn? How fast your crew can clear the decks?I run a fairly messy boat when fishing normally but when chasing these things you could hold a barn dance and nothing will get in your way.Good luck with it anyhow and i most likely see you out there if i am not further afield.

Oops back to reality. Set
Oops back to reality. Set your drag to 1/3rd of the rods capacity at strike and see how that works.
Cheers
