Drinking and boating

Just wondering if I'm the only person that refuses to take alcohol out on the boat. I figure if I can't/wont drink while I'm out, surely the deckie can wait till we get home too, so I can enjoy myself as well. So many people have declined an offer to come out for that reason.  Lucky for me my regular deckie is a non-drinker, but just wondering other peoples thoughts.

Nothing wrong with a couple on the boat but not too many as you need to keep your wits about you! But fair enough skippers rules as the end of the day :)

As long as it is done with safety in mind then I don't see anything wrong with it... Myself I think there is nothing better than cracking a cold one to celibrate the first good catch of the day, 2-3 for the day is more than enough (less than 1 standard drink an hour) especialy as I have to tow the boat home. I am very strickt with deckies/ passengers that the empties, tops and smoke butts go in the bin and not over the edge.

Cure sea sickness

Sat, 2011-05-21 22:41

Best thing to prevent sea sickness is a pie and sauce washed down with a bourbon lol.

Seriously tho, nothing wrong with a drink or two, but there is no room for a drunk on my boat.

If i go on someone's boat and they say no drinking then i accept there rules.

My thoughts would be that anyone who wont come out because you don't allow drinks is better not having on the boat. Bit surprised and I owuld say anyone who is like this may have a bit of a bigger problem if they can't go for a fish without grog. I also think it is a bit of horses for courses as well. there is very few things better than coming back across a glassed off sea up North in summer with a beer that has sat in an ice slurry all day.

I'd rather be trying to keep a sober person afloat than a drunk one in an emergency!

But yeah, a few's ok in my book.

Sun, 2011-05-22 08:46

I like having a few beers if the weather is warm when fishing but if the skipper wont allow drinks then i have no problems with that.Fishing is the number 1 priority and that where the enjoyment should come from.

Sun, 2011-05-22 08:59

Suprising really that a boat is a registered vehicle which requires a license to operate, yet there is no alcohol limit on the water here (Except for private water ways like canals i think??). Especially being West Australia where everything is heavily regulated. From memory, WA is the only state where we can do this?

Surely laws will be changed to bring WA into line with the rest of the country in the near future?

Sun, 2011-05-22 09:13

I'm not big on drinking in the boat, but normally throw a couple of stubbies in the icebox for the trip back in when up north.   there is nothing like an icy beer when doing 40 knots on glassy seas.   I leave it at that.

Especially when you're skipper, you need all your wits about you, touch wood nothing will ever happen, but having a skin full isn't going to help.

Hahaha might have to try that. lol

Usually sea sick tablets work for me, I take 1 the night before and 1 in the morning. By taking 1 the night before I find I dont get as drowsy. But drinking as well makes me sick and makes me pass out. lol.

As a skipper I don;t drink

Sun, 2011-05-22 09:39

but as a deckie I don;t mind a couple on the way back in.

I don't ban booze on my boat per say but my crew generally understand why I don;t drink when they ioffer me the first beer and I explain that I have their lives to consider along with my own and tend to moderate their drinking as a result. So far thankfully I haven't had to deal with a drunk deckie.

Apart from the ride out its pretty much full on fishing when I go out so no real time to relax with a coldie. (Not having drink holders helps too)

I have one in the icebox for when I pull up at the wharf after a days fishing or generally none at all - more so when I am away up north.

I can't see a problem with my deckies indulging in several bevies, I drink on my boat, but always limit myself as I would if I was driving a car.

If camping, only after I'm safely anchored for the night I'll kick on with a few more :)

I don't believe in being a teetotaller, just because I can't have a few beer then I am not going to ruin the fun for my deckies. As for deckies getting slaughtered etc. never had that problem, they have a few enjoy the day no worries. I like to think that my mates have the ability to make appropriate decisions, if they don't I would question why you have them on the boat.

your boat, your rules mate, and any one that does not resect that can swim home!

I have the same rules about life jackets, if I say they go on, then as my word is final, if not you don't come out again on my boat. I'm not silly about it, but when I decide it's not safe to be without one,  then it goes on for all!

Sun, 2011-05-22 21:09

Having an esky full of coronas is often the only way to make catch and release wrasse a fun past time.  Often crack my first drink before the sunscreen goes at 8.00am.  Know your boat and it's limits.  Don't fish over shallow reef on swelly days.  But probably wouldn't drink at a new or unfamilier spot.  If your not hurting anybody else do whatever you want.  And watch your front teeth if you drink glass stubies in a ali boat.

i like what someone else said, if they dont want to come because they cant have a beer......not worth taking them! Fishing trips are Fishing first, drinking last.

I dont mind a few bevies on my boat, i usually wont drink at all, unless in Exmouth when its nice n hot and a couple ice cold mid's go down bloody well on the trip in!

MOB, the way I read it was if it was about someone who would refuse to go fishing if they couldnt drink? E.g. someone who had an offer to go fishing then cancelled it when the skippers rules were no alcohol? Diff situation to a boat owner making the decision.

To each their own I say. Up to the skipper. I dont really mind on my boat or others boats as long as its responsible.

Mon, 2011-05-23 19:13

I think I take the same position on this as a lot of others do.  I don't mind if someone wants to have a beer or two during the day or after their first catch or on the way home?   As long as that's not the main reason they want to come out and as long as they don't have too many ie) write themselves off.  Personally I don't drink while I'm out fishing but I might have one or two on the way back and or once we get home.  But like a lot of others have said - It's the skipper's call.
