Drive on trailer fines
Submitted by carnarvonite on Mon, 2011-10-24 18:12
Heard from a mate well up in Dept of Transport that they are thinking seriously about issueing fines for people who drive their boats on their trailers on DoT supplied boat ramps.
The prop wash carries all the dirt out from under the ramp base causing it to erode and become unstable and in time, cave in.

Likewise. I would block the ramp up for hours trying to winch mine on. No way am I backing the cruiser in to the back doors to float the poofter on.
Can get her on d o d o in seconds and gone. Most of the time I am having a beer at the washdown before the tinny next to me is on the trailer.
Cheers

Problem
That will be your problem, not Dot's. Might have to fit a big winch or modify your trailer.

I find that a bit steep coming from a dept who doesn`t recognise a lot of our waterways as navigable so they don`t have to accept responsibility for them, ie Kalbarri river mouth

Unfortunately the CPBA
had to ban drive on drive off (dodo) down on our number 1 ramp because the prop action was under mining the floating pad on the sea bed, also the safety factor reared its head due to prop action churning up the water and other boats coming in behind the dodo. We were at the time, the only private club that allowed dodo up and done the coast.
A lot of members that had big boats (26' to 30') were a bit upset but all got good winchs and everything is A ok now. Sea rescue winches their rescue boat on with their electric winch also.
Honestly have sat and watched some boaties coming in before the ban of dodo, they took longer than people winching their boat up either by hand or electric winch. We've got a pro fesherman (last of the original founding members) that winchs his boat on fully ladened with his catch plus massive big eskies/ice on board. JMHO on the matter.

Fair Enough
Fair enough I reckon, it has been known for a long time what damage prop wash causes. Look out at their ramps if that's the case. Fremantle fishing boat harbour, Hillaries, Ocean Reef, Two Rocks, Carnarvon and Coral Bay. Not sure of any others....

Bit weird that in WA they hand out fines for driving onto your trailer, but in the East they promote it as it helps clear the ramps quicker.
No wonder they call it Wait Awhile!

Maybe when they started
Maybe when they started upgrading all the ramps years ago they should have started laying the concrete further back into the water to avoid the problem.
Nah thats to easy!!! It's like everything else they do with their half arsed that will do for now attitude. Typical government maximum spending for minimum return!!!

I would rather have a ramp
than not. So if I had to (I dont because a 5.4 is quicker to winch on, I've tried it) forego this I would be more than happy to comply. Better a ramp than a closed one for repairs etc.

thats why I'm going back to a rack & stack option, with ramps just designed for boats over 24foot and many long trailers actualy going off the end of the ramp.
It's a pity cayse DoDo is fatser for me by miles with the Berty.

Dodo does cause damage but it
Dodo does cause damage but it can be minimised to have low impact. It only causes an issue when the skippes fully rev the motors for quite some time digging up the sand and undermining the ramp. What these people need to do is go further back in with there trailers or only partially drive on and winch the remiander.

What a crock
If you do it right you dont need much power to drive it up onto the trailer. A bit of momentum and a final pulse of power to get it up and its done. I myself do not nudge it into the base of the trailer and then power it on all the way, why make more work for the motor. Let the momentum do it for you.
And as for efficient. My missus (yes the missus !) reverses the boat trailer in, i slip off and keep going out of the launch/retrieve area and swing around to the other side of the finger jetty, leaving all the room for everyone else. I dont use ropes and dont hit the jetty. Most damage to boats would occur at the ramps or jetties, yes ??
When i come in, she reverses the trailer in and as i said, bit of momentum and your pretty much there. Guarantee i'll get in and out more efficiently than anyone winching, whether it be a 3 mt tinny or a 26footer.
Where would the tides come into play in the north? I bet with the tidal movements, the sediment is washed away and replaced naturally anyway, to some extent.
If they want to play it like this, then they should start providing better facilities around the state. Spend some of that money they get from boat rego's and parking fees.
Australia, the free country. Just that its too restricted to enjoy !!

funny you dodo blokes!
sorry the majority of guys are definately not more efficient than most tinny owners, i often laugh at the ramp with the guy in the big boat attempting to reverse a boat from a trailer with the prop barely in the water, likewise with the moron infront of me with that much throttle trying to drive on i just about get sent over the marina outer wall, in saying that i can understand the difficulties in launching/retrieving a large boat and think dodo should be operators discresion

perhaps if it is going to be
perhaps if it is going to be restricted it should be only those with a boatcatch or similar allowed, this at least avoids the people who sit for 10 minutes scratching their a++ at 3/4 throttle then climbing over and connecting-which seems to me to be pretty dangerous in itself?
