Dropping fish on SPs
Submitted by piston broke on Sun, 2010-10-10 23:04
I have found that I am losing good fish midfight on the SPs. I mean the occasional lost fish is normal, but this is happening more frequently. Two reasons I can come up with, 1. The hooks on the Nitro jigheads are not chem sharpened. 2. The lead jighead hanging out of the fishes mouth would help it to throw the hook. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing. cheers Pete

not really. get good hook up
not really. get good hook up rates with sp's.
are you setting the hook well?? even a small dhu should engulf a 7/0
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

What i think happened is
What i think happened is when the fish bite the hook it went in straight like the hook is in the fishes mouth and the sinker would be at the lips, and when you are fighting the fish, you putting pressure on the lead part levers the hook out of the fishes mouth and pops off, just a theory.

easy solution
hook sharpener - I have found that the nitro's are not that sharp, but only take a second to touch them up. We always carry small diamond file in the boat when we chase billies, so I just pulled it out the other day and used it on the jig heads, worked a treat and no dropped fish.
I think the main cause of pulled hooks is going too hard, esp on dhuies. the amount I got in the other day that only had a bit of tissue hooked was ridiculous. Had I been fishing heavier or gone harder no doubt i would have dropped at least 3 of the 7.

I have found that u have to
I have found that u have to set the hooks good most of the time the fish will just swallow the plastic and all u feel is weight if u don't give the rod a good jerk to set the hook when u have turned the fish the hook and plastic will just come out
Play hard fish harder

Don't strike to early..........
Hi mate if your chasing Dhu's, Baldys, Snapper etc let the fish swallow the placcy properly before setting the hook, and try not to drop the rod tip too much while fighting the fish, applying constant pressure is the go.
And Till where did you get that owner file from?

I got it from JDM Tackle
I got it from JDM Tackle while I was topping up on other gear. Its got a fine groove down the straight side, and a wider one down the curved one. Says sold out, sure they will have them again sometime.

i found the same also on the weekend with the Nitro jig head, lost a few at the bottom where they may not have had the hook lodged and a couple of fish mid water. Mind you i wasn't using the most ideal combo, stay tuned for a report when i get back from the Gym.

TT Jig Heads
We've used the Nitro and TT jig heads a lot and we've landed more fish with TT heads, get better hook ups and less dropped fish. The sharp chemically sharpened point has a lot to do with it, a better and more secure hook set for sure.

Not had much joy with the tt's. Hooks are plenty sharp but don't seem real strong. Lost a few to broken or straightened hooks. Nitro for me.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Agree with dodgy. Have lost
Agree with dodgy. Have lost good fish with the TT's so only use Nitro's or the bigger heavy ones I make myself now. Keep them sharp and no dramas.

"lockup and heavy braid"
Running 20 & 30lb braid we've had no issues with TT heads including on northern fish. If ppl run heavier braid and or lockup then they can open up yes. TT the company are looking at releasing a stronger jighead range for "lockup and heavy braid" anglers.

If you have a look at
If you have a look at Jesse's fish youll notice that they are lip/light hooked.
Using a heavy drag would normally pull these fish. Jesse's $40 combo doesnt have a high drag capacity. The drag is actually not overly powerful.
Id be interested to see how much drag Jesse gets out of that reel as I doubt its over about 5 kilo if hes lucky. After that cheap drags can get real lumpy.
The other is the rod is very soft in the tip which absorbs a lot of the shock pressure from the fish which would normally pull the hook with a stiff rod.
It is recommended with both Soft Plastics and Bay Rubber jigs that a soft tip rod is used for a better hook up ratio.
It is also recommended the use of a minium of about 4 metres of mono leader.
A lot to be said about fishing lighter line. Less fish with hooks pulled out of mouths.

Whats the shark situation
Whats the shark situation like in Perth, serious question and not being smart? Sometimes the heavy handed tactics do come into play up here due to the fact that often, you are in a race with the taxman to get the fish first. There are spots that we can play the fish and haven't had issues but either way I prefer the insurance of the owners.

I am with Mullows
If you on to a fish that feels decent dont stuff around or the gray suits will come and Tax you. It is a pity to not enjoy the fight but if you do you have a dead fish anyway, some "make em piss" is a catch cry when on a decent fish. Dont use very heavy line but strong rods and reels.
Neels
Would prefer to"play" a little more and be more sporty, but that is in shallow water. Anything deeper than 15m here and the Taxies line up.
