Dundee landbased tackle?

 hey guys,

im headin up to Dundee Beach in NT during end of june for a wedding,

im gonna sneak a rod on the plane, which is a 9 ft custom made ide say its around 5 - 8 kg ( guestimate) and the reel i was gonna take is my daiwa opus 4500, which hasnt let me down ever for the years ive used her, although its only running 20lb mono

im looking to hopefully tick off the larger species of trevaly, barra and thredfin salmon off my list,

will this set up prove victorious? its the only one i think is in between the travel size and the size need to fight the fish

also in the way of lures, as i am a southwest fisherman, my lures are mainly metal slices and smiling jacks, few poppers ans soft plastics

will these cut it up there ?? any special techiques?

i am realy in the dark about the northern waters of australia and would appreciate the help

thanks

kyle

Shorebased?

Sat, 2013-04-20 14:05

Hey Superpeg , I have spent a bit of time in that area Bowhunting and Fishing , The first Question is are you shorebased or have access to a boat? If shorebased some of the better fishing is a little further South towards Channel Point , I have seen some locals pull serious Barra on Handlines with livebait off the beach on a rising tide , Trevally,Queenies and Bluenose Salmon as well ( Mudcrabs also) . Behind Dundee is Bynoe Harbour , but believe you will struggle withought a boat (not to many landbased options amongst the Mangroves if I recall correctly) .

It is a well known spot for Black Jew and Fingermark but generally at night and from boat ( only 150m from shore).

Take some bushmans or similar , recon you will need it..

 set up sounds fine for

Sat, 2013-04-20 16:01

set up sounds fine for shorebased work. I myself fish the beaches and creeks in that area quite a bit in the dry, the wind should be coming from over your shoulder and its a good time to be fishing there,

I like a falling big tide to fish the rocks, preferably at dawn and dusk, note the rocks have a lot of oysters on them  so a leader around 40lbs is the minimum that I use.

the rock groyne where the boats launch from sometimes has mackies in front within casting distance. Also the red rocks along the beach falling / incoming is when the barra and salmon are about,

cheers syd

Not too many baz around that

Not too many baz around that time of year. Should be plenty of Trev's and Queenies around though. Nothing too big as the NT seems to miss the largest models. Your outfit will be fine.

I would drop in and see Craig at Craigs Fishing Warehouse at Berrimah. (the old Got One) Craig is a bit of a Dundee LB specialist.
