How do you rig up for spinning lures?

was spinning metal lures for tailor yesterday and had a few bust offs.  Started 25lb leader with loop knot.  Then 60lb with Egg clip. Straightened the egg clip.  No more twisties In tackle box.  Mate suggested swivel to split ring then lure which I've done when trawling.   Wondering what other people use / do?

You really shouldn't tie line

Sat, 2013-06-01 15:17

You really shouldn't tie line onto a split ring. It is a split ring and will munch your line. If not the next time, the one after, or sometime.

Try line to swivel, swivel to split, then the lure, or line to solid, solit to split, split to lure.

Been doing it this way for

Thu, 2013-06-06 10:15

Been doing it this way for years when I have no Hawaii clips never had a bust off, just always tie on the double-up part of the ring a good knot will not slip onto the single part where it can rub.

Stick with

what your doing just get rid of the clip.

Just cut and re-tie whenever you change lures. Sure clips are convenient but they can be unreliable.

Agree with the ditch-the-clip comment. However what egg clips are you using? I will not use anything except Decoy egg snaps "cross rock" (cross lock?)  gotta love the japlish.

yep Decoy,  I think size 4. So should have been more than heavy enough.  Straightened out when it went airborne.

I use Hawaiian Snaps to clip

Sat, 2013-06-01 20:47

I use Hawaiian Snaps to clip on and clip off metals and poppers when flicking for Tailor and Salmon. For the line I use braid to sebile knot, to 40lb wind on leader, to swivel, to 80lb short leader, to the Hawaiian Snap. Depending on the location I am throwing lures from and the anticipated size of the fish, I may go lighter or heavier leaders.

Started using snap swivels

Thu, 2013-06-06 07:11

I used to go snapless swivel treaded onto O ring. Ive started using snap swivels again. They are just so convenient..... I think being able to change lures quickly and easily catches me more fish. Yes They can fail you.....I don't use them on my heavy tackle just when chucking for Tailor and Salmon........even use tiny ones when popping for Whiting. Been a few years since i reverted back to snaps and have'nt failed me yet this time around

Leader, swivel, split ring

Thu, 2013-06-06 07:54

Leader, swivel, split ring onto the lure but only with metals. All other lures I get rid of the split ring & use a loop knot straight to the lure, if it's a walk the dog stickbait a half blood knot instead of the loop.

Might be a dumb question but

Might be a dumb question but did you have your drag set properly? And how big were these tailor? Seems like it would take alot of pressure to straighten a clip. I use them all the time and have never had that happen (ok once, but that was using a way undersize one that got smashed by a mackie).

I think I had the drag to

Thu, 2013-06-06 19:42

I think I had the drag to heavy,  the one that bent the clip I'm guessing 50cm+, happened when he jumped..  Had another fish Sunday night.  Kept the drag light and went swivel to split ring.  Not as quick to change but ok if you keep the pliers handy.

I like to tie a perfection

Thu, 2013-06-06 18:33

I like to tie a perfection loop direct to the lure, never had any trouble with that one. Gives the lure a much more natural action.

cheers

Dale
