Dunsborough Shallow Water
Submitted by Pezdog on Tue, 2014-12-30 11:57
Hi all
Just recently got a little tinny and am looking to get into some shallow water fishing off Dunsborough. Obviously can't go far so whiting, squid etc would be target species.
Is it best to try the weed beds and sand patches in the bay or not really worthwhile and better to wait for a calm day and head around near the southern beaches?
Been out in the bay and it seems really flat and shallow for miles. Is there any structure about close in or more of the same?
Cheers

For Squid
Launch at Quindalup
Drive boat about 30om out so you are between the ramp and the yacht club In about 2m of water.
Thow squid jig out and place rod in holder while drifting
Sit back and enjoy cold beverage while waiting for squid to hook itself.
Thats was our method when we where down and caught a good feed of squid on both days we did it.
Depending on the size of the tinny on flat calm days launch at quindalup and shoot out to the artifical reef to try for sambos.
From memory there looked to be some decent rises on the sounder heading west along the cape a couple of km offshore but we where moving fairly quickly so didnt pay to much attention.

Only 3.75m so can't go out far unfortunately!
The beers sound the go but at 6am might be a bit of rusty nails.

Artifical reef dunsborough.
The reefs are 5 kls offshore and right in front of sea rescue and on a good day you'll get there easy and if it's big sambo's your after that's the place and if you get into trouble use your mobile phone and get help. With the radar they have Sea Rescue will be right onto you fast as. Squid will be on the weed banks on your way out and just drift over them.

When we were kids we used to
When we were kids we used to head out a few hundred metres offshore the sandbar outside of Greenacres Caravan Park (now gone) and get into some good KGW in the holes in the weed and leave a squid jig out on a float and pull it in when it started bobbing.
You should be able to drift through the shallows and nail some yellowfin on poppers too. I did well at Mandurah today using the Scumdog and the Pop Dog with the trebled removed and assist hooks on the back.
Should be some flatties around Eagle Bay too if it's calm enough.
