Dylans First Super Deep fish on the JIg!!!!
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2013-01-15 14:37
With yesterday forecasting looking nice I was keen to pull my craypots and chase spanish mackerel. That said my mate Dylan has been asking for me to take him out and do the Super Deep for ages and I said bugger it lets go!
I've got plenty of fish in the freezer and I said we will launch late, pull my craypots and do recon work at new spots which I enjoy. I said to Dylan I wont fish at all but happy to get a mate onto his first Super Deep fish on jig.....which is a buzz for me!
We launched late and headed out to my craypots, pulled my two pots and got a feed of whites & reds. By now its was lunch time so lets head out to the Super Deep. I did a fair bit of recon and with the magic weather conditions it was ideal to search around. A spin out was also seeing a estimated 15kg wahoo on the surface swimming 3m away from my boat and he did a bog lap and left. I quick troll produced nothing but what a buzz to see it the super deep depths!!
After a few hours of recon it was approaching 3 pm and the wind had started so I said to Dylan lets leave the recon and get you a fish. Dylan being Dylan always takes the piss and said you'll guarantee me fish?....... I said " yes ".....that wiped off his smug look ( ha ha) and he said ok ..... I will hold you to that!!!
I went to one of my spots and sounded around, the sounder was quiet and every co-ord wasnt showing fish but kept on driving around. It was about 4pm now and thought mmmhhhh maybe time to move on and thought time to check the outskirts and what a lovely sight.....I found some fish. The Furuno lit up and Dylan said what fish are they..... I said bass and blue-eye by the looks!
Dylan was keen to drop a Super Deep 1kg jig as he hasnt done this before. I said we'll try these new water activated " Esca " flashing lights which over the world are popular escially in the Super Deep stuff. I attached it to my jig and and after showing Dylan how to jig it he dropped to the bottom and started jigging. After he worked the jig up I said freespool it now " but " watch for the rod tip bounces as the fish hit it on the drop......within seconds that happened and I said engage the reel and strike. The Jigging Master rod fully loaded up and he was onto a descent Bass groper by the looks!!!
It was a great fight and all manual wind up as he wanted to earn his fish. By now the wind had picked up so I was keen to get in and after a quick pic we took off......that fish made Dylans day and a quality fish at that on the Super Deep 1 kg jig!!
Dylan with his Bass groper on the Super Deep 1kg Jig (electronic scales 23.98kg)
Was a great day on the water and even thought I didnt fish at all was great to see a mate get a fish he's always wanted & on jig......cheers Pickos!!!!!

Looks like a bloody great fish!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Thanks for your comments guys!
Ryan is a top skipper, and knows how to find fish although he does work hard and spends the time to sound around and find the fish before dropping. He has spent alot of time on the water doing recon and this is why he does well every time he heads out.
Was awsome dropping down the 1KG Super Deep Jig with the "Esca" attached.
It's an amazing feeling hooking up too fish on jig and even better fighting them manually from those depths. We did catch a green eye during recon which we just used the electric to "winch up" and i recall saying to Ryan " this is boring" haha.
My 2nd biggest highlight of the day was seeing the Wahoo cruise around the boat, just shattered we didn't have a stickbait ready to sight cast!!
A huge thanks to Ryan for taking me out on his boat and putting me on some big super deep fish, muchly appreciated.
Cheers,
Dylan

Massive Fish
To pull from that depth on manual gear, your arms must have been sore. Was good to have a chat with you and kenny yesterday, pritty sure you said it was only a baby around 10KG!!
Well done guys, its a good reminder to hear about the circuling and sounding for fish before dropping!!

Interesting to hear about the
Interesting to hear about the esca lights making it out here, we trialed them in 2010;
http://www.tackletester.com/index.php?s=esca
We really didn't rate them, and in some cases found that they really put the fish off, horses for courses I guess.
You can see from the pic they are cut from a single sheet of ali with just the holes punched in them.

Super Deep!
Yes Dylan was a very happy man that day and the next day in the shop also. Was good to see FW members visiting the shop and talking to Dylan about that day and Blake said every super deep jig, patternoster rig or electric outfit went out with an Esca lights......ha ha confidence!!
chrisp, I said to the wholesaler I would test the strength of it and attach it that way and it held up. The way we use it and recommend attaching it to a Super Deep jig is off the top ring of the jig so independant. As for the Super Deep patternoster rigs we recommend attaching it to the top swivel of the rig so independant also!!
Brock, yeh driving around and finding fish is paramount and I wont drop unless I see fish!
As for the add-on light attractors.........I've done testing many many years ago in the Super Deep with different water activated lights & led lights etc supplied to me by commercial companys. Some were too bulky.....some too bright and not stream line!
The Esca have been proven around the world and we have been asked for them before also but now after using them both with bait/patternoster rig setup and jigs I'm impressed and I will always use them & stock them in my shop. They have a soft fade light and soft blink light so not intrusive and very stream line so perfect for rigs or jigs!!!!
That spot that I took Dylan to hasnt produced big Bass groper on jig for a while and thats more a bait spot as often they dont eat jigs/very fussy......the test was the Esca and you can only look at your results and lets say all future trips they will be used " all the time". I've used the fading blue Esca and the blinking blue Esca and couldnt see a difference between the two but they work!
I know a few commercial fisherman doing the Super Deep stuff with Esca and they have been using them periodically on different drop lines to test the results and they said to me they got more bigger fish and more blue-eye with the Esca attached ..... " interesting "..... good enough for me!!!
Thanks guys for your comments

Thanks for all the comments
Thanks for all the comments guys.
I was impressed with the strength of the Esca and it held up to the bass nicely. As Ryan said though, attaching to the top of your jig or super deep rig is the way to go as it is attracting fish to the baits or your fluttering jig. Was actually speaking with a guy in store today who has been using them and having great success on big Blue Eye and Bass. I personally think they are a good investment as you do spend a lot of time, money and effort chasing these fish and you want to be rewarded with results like myself.
Was really good to have the opportunity to test this product! Thanks again Ryan.
