Earth Worms?

Hey guys, i was just wondering if anybody knows what sort of places to find earth worms in summer when the soil is mostly dry and stuff. I assume turning over dirt near rivers/creeks would be a good start.

Any i was also wondering if anyone knew if there was any way that you could breed earth worms to save having to go searching for them before going out chasing redfin or cobbler... i'm just not sure how i could breed earth worms around my home because i dont know what sort of stuff to give them to keep them from starving...i would think that you could get a fairly large container fill it with soil and keep the soil damp and put in some old bits of rotting wood for them to eat and stuff but yea. We have compost worms but they arent guite desighned for fishing because they arent guite as big as easrth worms therefore they dont go on the hook as well and the earth worms seem to be better for live bait thats why i want them so if anyone can help me get some ideas of either where to find them in summer or how to breed them at home iot would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Redfin 4 Life.

Earthworms or Bloodworms?

Sat, 2010-02-06 21:55

Redfin are you talking about the everyday earthworm found in the garden or bloodworms that are found in the river and estuary's????

If earthworms then Matt and Gareth have given you the right advise. If you start an earthworm farm you can feed them any food scraps but lettuce leaves and vege peel are the best.

If you mean Bloodworms can't help with breeding but the best way to get fresh ones is to dig up a shovel load of soil from the shores of a river/estuary and search through that. They stopped people doing it in the swan about 20 years ago but may be diff now. Used to get some about 30 cm's long down mandurah way years ago.

Cheers,
David

I doubt you will get Earth

I doubt you will get Earth Worms at stores like Bunnings. Compost Worms yes, but not Earth Worms. Earth Worms being much bigger in size, require different living conditions and generally like to live deeper in the soil. Compost Worms live closer to the surface, often underneath rotting organic matter.

Well dont dig bankside

We have enough issues with erosion with disturbing the damp riverside banks - compost worms (brandlings) are an earthworm variety (yellow striped) and there are others which are plain red but still love compost, most earthworms in the west are pale almost grey and relatively small

If you want real worms then Victoria is the place with scrubworms as thick as your thumb and giant gippsland worms (if they are not already extinct)

the old guy at the midland weighbridge sells worms, and sharpens knives too, he's just past guildford grammar school on the left heading into midland.  cheers
