East Coast Bills

Myself and a mate wrer lucky enough to get on a boat - 37 Riv and fish the NSW Game Fish Interclub Tournament out of Port Stephens. The whole crew including the skipper were all rookies having never caught a billfish of any description so we were all pumped to get into some fish.

Final result Day 1 Tag & Rlease of a Shortbilled Spearfish taken on trolled skirt purple on 8 KG line class est.weight 25- 30 KG

Day 2 Tag  & Release of a Blue Marlin taken on skip bait slimy mackeral on 15 KG lineclass est.weight 150KG

                 Day 3  Cancelled Bad Weather

Day 4 Tag & Release of another Shortbilled Spearfish taken on trolled skirt purple on 8 KG lineclass est weight 25-30 KG

If we had killed either of the Spearfish and weighed them would likely have been a record as the record is  26.5 on 8KG

Although other boats in the fleet of 176 boats caught more fish and some less we were all stoked about catching our first bills and watching them swim away again !

Good luck to all you guys chasing those West Coast Bills over the coming weeks

That's a great result for a bunch of Billie virgins! Even better to get them all on light gear. How do te Spearfish go? I did hear they had a really big year on them on the east coast this year.

And yeh and must b e a good year for them, I heard of at least 2 others caght over the 2 weekends much smaller than ours , still a pretty rare catch ,  the 2 we caught went hard on the 8KG stayed down deep, didn't do the arials like the Marlin. Do you get the Speafish over there and how big do they get ?
