Easter vis/water temp/catches
Submitted by scotto on Wed, 2019-04-17 19:22
So a 10 day break looms for most of W.A. I thought it’d be a good thread if folks could put up where they are, general catches, water temps, vis reports, yadda yadda.
I’m personally heading to Kalbarri, so it’d be good to see whether to chuck in the spear gear, or just troll for mackies when and where I can.
Hopefully after fridays shit weather front, it gets warm enough the beach fishos get an eyeful of bikini splitarse, or dunsborough milfs
happy easter muthafwers!

Ok, I'll start
Not Easter yet, but start of holidays. Last Sunday, north of Kalbarri. Weather overcast but calm, water temp 23.3 deg. Swell down from what it had been, , but still some there. Water looked OK away from the beach. Tried for some pinks first, got a few, returned them until we caught two better ones, to 65cm. Some small tuna showing, birds around. Trolled tight around a bird showing for a decent YFT maybe 18kg, certainly our best off this boat so far. Released. Nothing else happening, so went back to demersals, looking for the other two, got a 65cm Dhu and a nice baldie. Lots of just size/undersize pinks in places, which is a nice change from the drought of recent years. Demersal quota filled , so left them biting and trolled towards home for nothing. Very few mackerel around. Big swell last few days, water dirty.

sounds good!
looks like a pumper swell rolling through on good Friday, so might leave the guns at home and stick to trolling. a barrel yellowfin would be handy!

Rotto
At Rotto, 10 yo daughter, 1st drop pulled in a 85cm salmon on her 2500 reel, we also caught an emperor of some sorts (gold dots across the face), a 1.5m whiskery shark and a couple of KG whiting and plenty of weed on the anchor in Thompson Bay.

Great to have a 10 break even
Great to have a 10 break even if not getting away.
Hope to get a dive or two in next week...Will target the 20m mark again...last few months the vis and surge has been good with a few PB's being looped.

Yeah the bastard couldn't wipe the smile off his face. Good on him though we'd discussed his plan of attack the night before. Paid off big time!

The river is coming down at Kalbarri
Not enough in it to disrupt operations, could be good opportunities in the rivermouth for mulloway and mudcrabs. I took some visitors out to the loop yesterday, and it was actually choc milk on the upstream side, pre-flood on the other. So it should be here tonight/tomorrow.

Thanks Ranmar. We are due up
Thanks Ranmar. We are due up after the school hols some time and have been watching the river levels. The first bit doesnt seem to have hit town yet but another decent rise in water levels has been registered out at emu springs. It doesnt seem like there are any Macks around anyway.

No fish
trolled for 4 hours to the north of Kalbarri today without a sniff. Water temp 22.5, but gets colder the more north you go. Vis looked low, and water was green. South looked dirtier though. Maybe just a tailor bash in the morning, and plan for later in the week.

Yes, i'd be targetting demersals
Find some gnarly looking bottom beween 12 and 22 m, anchor so you hang just over the outside edge of it. Only way to fish when the easterly is fresh like today.

Abrolhos, twice just before
Abrolhos, twice just before easter.
3 days with my boys, plenty baldies but buggerall birds activity and no mackies.
Home for one day and back over with my old boss 6 of us with cray boat, 7.5 jet and 7.5 stern drive with all the gear
4 days, plenty baldies, couple dhuies and lots sweetlip.
Plenty pre lunch beers and post dinner red wine, and bang a few nails in the camp.
Despite the forecast being really good, both trips had 25+kn nights and a couple of 20 knot days
Thats the islands I know, all over!

Barri
river has flooded, as of yesterday arvo. The Ocean is literally iced coffee straight out the front at the moment, and a few kms each way. Shot passed all that shit, and trolled nearly down to lucky bay, for absolutely fuck all. Water is green and cold 21.5’c. Bottom bashed for a couple of pinkies, but thought my money would be better spent on beer at the pub than wasted on boat petrol, so now I’m smashing a couple of little doves.
Spoke to heaps of fisher blokes at the park, and no one has been catching fish over the last 6 or so days. A couple of herring at red bluff is all I’ve heard of.

Finally got out today
Family obligations and transport to Perth done. Did a solo trip north , start at first light, only one other boat out. Green cold water. Good numbers of pinks inside, but most u/s. I generally don't keep them until they are 60cm or so, so no keepers. tried out along the depth where we were catching good fish in the runup to Easter, nothing but bloody sharks, one after the other. Tried a troll in the shallows where we caught them this time last year, nothing. So went a bit further out and got a nice baldie, another just over which went back, and heaps of blue line and undersize spangos. Very hard going. Got in after 5 with just a baldie to show for it.
