Electric reel battery

Hi guys,

recently bought an electric reel to take fishing up north. Haven't bought a battery yet but just wondering what everyone uses and what's the most economical to do the job? Probably only use it few times a year. Do I just buy a car battery and then trickle charge after each day of fishing? Any advice is appreciated

Check out the Maph electric reel battery. WA based company. I went out a few weeks ago with a lad that had one of these and looked really convenient.

Ive just ordered one of the 10000MAH models. the details say they apparently last a full day deep dropping but I have my doubts. Does anyone have any expereince that could confirm this? I know there is a lot of variables (depths, amount of fish caught etc as the reel would obviously draw the most power when fighting them) but I would really like to know if its realistic to expect them to last a full day fishing, and catching, in the 150-200m range?

thanks heaps

there was a very good post

Mon, 2024-04-29 21:21

there was a very good post recently on Laith Rickmans reel servicing facebook page, the Maph battery seemed to stack up technologically against hose utilising the itech jump start kits and similar. However from what Ive read - you're looking at 4 drops ish.....will see if i can find the posts and copy the text in.

I run a 120 ah deep cycle through a Kings battery box and that takes two Seaborg Megatwin 1200's (as the box allows for the twin connections).

Deep Cycle

Car battery is good to start a car but that is about it, you need a deep cycle for constant power, you could hook it up to a solar charger to keep it topped up between trips with it.

Why not

Why not just use the boat battery? If you got alligator clips just hook on.

And then

Fri, 2024-04-26 20:05

And then if it drains the battery you can't start the motor ?? Most car and boat batteries are made to give a large amperage surge to start a motor then let the motor run everything , you can kill a battery in a car with just a minute or 2 of cranking but a deep cycle can run a campsite for days with fridges, lights, radios etc and just recharge them with no harm done. Most dual battery systems in a camper has a main hi amp battery just for the car and run a deep cycle for the fridge etc while out and about, after starting your car the Alt recharges the bit it took to start the car and then switch over and then trickle charge the deep cycle to keep it topped up.

I have helped out a few people that had run their battery low and were a hundred plus KM from any service and no cell phone towers out there. One guy was stuck at False enterance in Shark bay for 3 days and were running low on food and water, we were camped only 25 km away but it could of been 250 as neither of us knew about the other and the UHF radios didn't work over that distance, I have been going up there since 1981 and there was NOTHING up there back then, even the track was hard to see going into Steep Point. (I spent Xmas in 84 up there and we had the point all to ourselves for 4 days of a 2 week trip.)Even towed a few boat into Ocean reef marina when they had electrical gremlins hit their boat.

not having a go at you buddy just a long answer from someone that has been at both ends of that situation ( my dad started taking me and my brother camping every second weekend from age 5 and I only stopped when a work accident stopped me about 7-8 years ago, I turn 61 this year).

My Daughter was conceived in the sand dunes at Steep point back in '88 , wink wink.

I don't

DD that much (2 - 3 trips a year) and find I usually have motor running when drifting so I just clip to the house battery.

My two bobs worth,if you use

 My two bobs worth,

if you use boat battery and run it flat, how much would you pay for a deep cycle then?

I'm with maverick, deep cycle and avoid any potential issues, chuck a set of jumper leads in and you have 2nd battery for boat if you already don't have one

 I haven't deep dropped now

Sun, 2024-04-28 09:05

I haven't deep dropped now for quite some time, but back when I did, we always ran 2 reels off the start battery.

Could fish all day and not have a problem, but that was with dual battery set up so there was always backup for just in case...
