Engel question
Submitted by SandGroper84 on Thu, 2014-01-23 20:27
G'day members,
I have a question about Engels, I'm heading down to Albany for the long weekend with the lady and unfortunately the cruiser is out of commission due to a gearbox issue so I'm taking the ute down, my problem is I have a hard tornue cover on the back and my engel does not fit standing up, I've done a crazy amount of "googling" to try find out if it's will destroy or effect the engel if I lay it on it's side, the engel will NOT be running when on it's side, any info or opinions on this topic would be much appreciated.
regards
Matt

I'd recommend against it
refrigeration compressors are simplistically a can 1/4 filled with oil and a electric motor suspended on springs in the middle. What tends to happen when you lay them down is the oil runs out of the motor and can cause it to seize, worst case is the motor pops of the spring mounts.
If you have to lay it down see if you can see the pipes coming off the compressor and make sure they're pointing up.
From memory Lyons Air conditioning in Welshpool are service agents, they may be able to give a definitive answer

Thanks diver albie, I thought it would be a bad idea, few eskies and bucket loads of ice it is!

nothing is made way it used
nothing is made way it used to be and now days its very common to have contamination of the oil, if muck in the oil gets in a capillary tube that will mean trouble. Having said that I have seen plenty of fridges of all types transported long distances incorrectly without problems as long as they were left to stand a day before turning on

Ring Engleland
In Balcatta. The compressor in engel is not the same as others and can run fine on a decent angle. This is by design. Swing motor I think they call it. As for transporting fully on side call the experts for advice,

Swap position
The missus can lay down in the back and the engel in the cab with a few coldies.
Old fishermen never die they just smell that way.

not the same as they were
Yeah Engels aren't like they used to be, my 40 litre compressor /cooling unit shat its self and only used in the back of car.
Its about 6 years old, bought a new cooling unit @ $495. now she's like new again.

cheers for the comments guys,
cheers for the comments guys, ended up taking the waeco 85L iceberg esky and the 50L cool box, 4 bags of ice in the waeco lasted the full 4days no worries at all, had to restock the cool box after 2 days, as for getting the lady to lay in the back of the ute... I suggested it but she wasn't overly keen on the idea.. unless I was in the back with her ;)
On another note, fishing was some what average, cleaned up on 30ish cm bream in the kalgan.
again cheers for the comments/suggestions!!
