Engines and boats

If you are interested in boats and motors, in response to post on Etecs, see the new Cummins/Mercruiser QSD 2.0 130hp and 150HP stern drives, they are meant to be superb, but pricey, about $30,000 plus. See the new Panga boats made in USA, 7ft 7inch beam, 26 ft long, 1,000kg hulls foam filled, very economical on fuel with either the diesel or outboard. They can be powered by 150hp outboard up to 225hp and get about 1 mile/litre, much more with the diesel. See anglerboats.com or apex panga or andros boats. These boats are improved hull versions of the Southwind style banana boat with full height sides and are wider and longer, but still not overwidth in Australia. They have their own forums on the net.  I have a UB670, but these seem like they are the perfect replacement as I get older.

Yeah I read the panga forums

Yeah I read the panga forums too, westrib had an apex diesel panga on their lists awhile back, think they have dropped it now. Pangamarine.com's niente looks nice, the cc is a bit far forward though. www.androsboats.com. I heard a rumour that the "wild lizard" pangas available around australia are in fact made by allmandboats.com in sri lanka. Allmand's HP ratings are lousy, I know pangas are good on the gas, but they only rate the 16' to 25hp =0

The dolphin polyethelene longboats are pretty interesting too.

Allmand

Allmand seem to market stuff they make in Sri Lanka and import from China, problems probably in getting approved in Australia as they now have standards to be met. The Apex Panga is now at Hayway, good looking boat and a lot cheaper than Westribs.

Allmand make all their

Allmand make all their pangas in sri lanka, pretty sure. What do they get from China? Another interesting boat is the plastic rotomoulded pangas. A scottish website says they source theirs from indo, and they were imported into australia for awhile under the name of flexihull. One of the top end charters has a few of them I believe. Pity no one has worked out how to leave the bloody bench seats out of them, or at least put in some sort of false floor of a u-bracket like my old rowboat as a kid.

Allmand

Search this company using Panga + Qingdao Bestyear hardware &..., they make the larger Pangas for Allmand and may even make some of the smaller ones, Alland site used to claim they had a factory in China and there were photos of it. The Anglers and Andros pangas are very different to Allmand, his look like a copy of the Yamaha, the others don't have such a flat section at rear. I haven't seen the rotomoulded ones, do you know a website?, somehow I think I will stick to glass for my fishing. I want a boat I can go out deep in, tow up north without being overwidth so we can drive at night, economical on fuel as we have to cart fuel to the boat and reasonably light so I can get it out of creeks etc.
The rotomoulds probably need the seats to keep them together structurally.

Ahh I have seen the qingdao

Ahh I have seen the qingdao bestyear ones before, didn't realise they were the allmands as well.
Rotomoulded ones fall between glass and ali. Its very tough, lighter than glass, but better ride than ali.
Yes, the bench seats are to keep the gunwales apart, as well as one can double as a fuel tank as well.
This scottish website says they're made in indo. This south american one says otherwise. If you view the extra pictures on that site though, you recognise this building in the background as being the same one as in this picture; Fleihull dolphin 620 longboat, so you would assume that they come from the same place.

Plastics

I have only seen the little plastic ones that are around, not these, on the last site you mentioned, they have one for sale for $34,000 with a 60hp motor. Vaughans fishing in the Kimberley uses them, but I think they probably are a bit more competition for the Wild Lizards or Southwinds than the US Pangas, and I'm not so sure I would have the confidence in them 20 miles offshore like I do my UB670. I cannot understand why boat manufacturers in Aus don't make a 7.5 foot wide boat that is say 23 to 26foot long, when I'm drift fishing we need the length to fish more people, the boat rides better in the sea, they are much more economical, need less HP, lighter, and they aren't overwidth like the US boats so you can trailer them at night. Before the advent of powerful motors most of the boats built were narrow and served their purpose well. A length to beam ration of 3.5 to 4 is seen as ideal as a very efficient hull, thats why the US go fast boats are built like that. You might be right that then Wild Lizards are Allmands, if not they all use similar moulds to the Southwind, all 22 foot and the same beam with the same delta pad under. You now have trouble with imported boats and getting them licensed, they need to comply with Aus and US standards I believe, unless you put yourself down as the manufacturer. Maybe thats what Wild Lizard does?
