Gday all, thought i might just throw the line out and see what info anyone out there on fishing tour/trips in Peninsula Malaysia (not borneo Malaysia), if there are any. Looking to have a bit of leave there in the near future and would like to get a spot of fishing in whie i am there. Any info anyone has on saltwater and/or freshwater fishing ventures in Malaysia would be much appreciated.

Plenty of Fishing to be had in Malaysia

Sun, 2009-08-23 22:15

Hi Buz,

Some great fishing in and around Peninsular Malaysia.
From ponds, lakes and rivers to deep sea and game fishing !
About 2 hours from JB on the East Coast is a place called Kuala Rompin... Supposed to be great for sails !
Or there are many ponds and lakes that stock some rather large freshwater species !
I was thinking about setting up fishing tours to Malaysia...but never got around to it..

For info try here as a start..

Malaysian Fishing Forum
http://www.fishing.net.my/forum/default.asp

Fishing Kaki is a Singapore based forum, but has good references for Malaysia.

From another WA Fishing Forum....
Bit expensive, you can do it much cheaper...But all the info to get started !

Yes there are some decent

Yes there are some decent sized fish in the ponds in Thailand.

This is considered a small Mekong Catfish.  Slow but very powerful run.  Great fun on heavy Carp gear, one of the big ones took me over 45 mins to bring to the net.  It's all catch and release and they don't like you to pick it up for pics as the fish gets hurt.

SEA fishing

Hi Buz,
The main attraction for Peninsula Malaysia (saltwater) would be popping for Sailfish. This is done at Rompin and the season has already begun. You should be able to google around for some leads - and prices do vary. I have the contact number for one of the boatmen, but ironically most tour operators I know who organise package trips there are based in Singapore. I will be going with one of these groups in early October.

The most famous pond in Bangkok is Bungsamran. They have some mighty big freshwater fish in there - some are easily 50kg and some catches go up to three digits. I have heard of people pond-fishing there with Stella 20000 reels. If you want to chase endless amounts of impoundment barra I can get the contact for you too, but the name at the moment slips my mind.

Good luck.

Cheers for the info Alfred.

Cheers for the info Alfred. And nice cattie too. Funny how in Oz we despise them and count them as a nuisance. But i guess if we got them to the size they do over there more people might target them.It seeems you can get a pic of you holding your fish from what i have seen on the net, just you have to get in the water with the fish to get the pic. But i guess of it is an awesome fish its worth getting a little bit wet!

Hey Kasey, cheers for the heads up on Rompin. Sound pretty awesome. I was more keen to begin with on targeting the big freshwater species you cannot get in Oz, but now after having a look on the net about Rompin i am a bit torn. I only have about a week to spare around the end of SEP/beginning of OCT, and now am torn between chasing sailies at Rompin or chasing exotic freshwater giants in Thailand. Might have to do a bit more research on them both before making my decision. But yeah if you could get the details on that barra impoundment fishing that would be awesome. If you also dont mind me asking, which tour operator are you planning to use for your Rompoin trip?

Cheers for the info again lads and if anyone else has into tips for me please keep them coming!

Buz.

Around the end of Sept to

Thu, 2009-08-27 15:16

Around the end of Sept to beginning of Oct is a good time for Rompin. I will be going with a friend who organises this from Singapore. If you want more details send me a PM, or you can google Angler's Hut.

For the sake of convenience, if you are pressed for time, Bungsamran is very comfortably set up - you will have a hut, a guide, food and alot of beer. Rompin is almost a 5 hour drive from Kuala Lumpur - and you may need to organise a group yourself or try and latch on to any of the tour operators - most of which are 3D 2N stays.
