Entry Level GT Popping reel

Any recomendations?

Not expecting  to   pay  $100 but  dont  wanna  fork  out  a $1k  either  for  a type  of  fishing  i  wont do  regularly.

Something  that  has  the  versatility  for  jigging   would  be  ideal.

Thanks in advanced.

Any experiences  with either  either  is  welcomed.

I have never owned a saragosa, but my 6500 saltist has caught plenty of pelagics. Saltist probably has a faster retrieve than the saragosa if that's what you want

The Saragosa 18000F is a good reel for entry level GT stuff, very strong & reliable.

Thanks guys. Any experiences with the Quantum Cabo 80's? They seem good for about 19kgs of drag.

Will line capacity be an issue here?

I have used my cabo jigging and bottom bashing with out any problems handles sambos nicely. Line capacity should not be to much of a problem I have 300m of 65pound nitlon on my plus a fair bit of backing.

Saragosa are good but recently we got the Ryobi Carnelian 12000 in and I'm very impressed. Quality reel indeed and well priced...............that would be my pick!

Definately another vote for the Ryobi Safari 5000. These were the creme-de-la-creme not so long agao with popper fishibng for Big GT's. These were a $1200 plus reel when they were made in japan. The engineering is still same and not too many issues lately with build or reliability AFAIK. They also come with 2 spools and double up as a good beach dishing reel spooled with 30lb braid.

They were only really tops

Mon, 2011-12-26 10:39

They were only really tops because there was nothing else out there. My brother has one and its a little annoying really. Very heavy, gearing neither high nor low, not enough drag for more than 50lb line.

Yeh, proably right there Till but nonetheless they are a strong well built reel with a decent and smooth drag and IMO pretty darn good value for $250 odd bucks. They are pretty simple to pull down and service too.

build quality in the ryobis can be suspect

Thu, 2011-12-29 20:01

I recently found the build quality in the ryobis can be suspect. Brought overseas 4 lower level reels than the metaroyal to find the spare spools in 3 and main spool in one had damage to the lips making them unusable. The chips were covered by the annodising so happened before they were built. The store said return the reels at my cost and they will see if they can get them replaced. The cost of postage was close the price of the spools with no guarantee the replacements would be any better. Sent off a message to ryobi in china, no reply. Tried another of their email addresses no reply. Maybe the qulaity control will be better on the flagship spinning reel or you will get better treatment from a store here.

The saragosa is a tough proven reel that will do the job and certainly gets my vote.
