landbased jgging for billfish ey? (the bills just the lower jaw, not the upper :p). Not a  bad haul, and certainly a nice feed.

Not that much a fan of gardies, but I do fillet all my whiting into bone free fillets. A lot of tedious work, sure, but I think its worth it

hahah nice work!!, we dont fillet our gardies just scale it,gut it, press it flat, remove the central bone and then deep fried the little bones just become crispy adds to the flavour =)

I haven't caught many gardies lately but when I used to chase them years ago I would nearly always fillet them. Sometimes I'd do them like Dicey said but mostly fillets. They are easy to butterfly once you know how and dusted then quickly fried they don't last long.

I like to catch them for a feed of Fresh fish, I also scale and flatten them out.

Not that much of a challenge to catch, but a nice feed makes it wortwhile.

I actually found it pretty hard to catch them. They're so timmid! What bait is the go? I caught these on tiny pieces of mullie (I mean a big metal jig! :P) but I've used bread before but they always seem to avoid the bread with the hook in it.

I actually enjoy the finesse filleting. Obviously wouldn't bother if there were bigger or better fish to catch, but when that's the only thing there I won't say no.

tiny pieces if prawn work good but maggots work best, tiny hook maybe 8/0 9/0 and about at least 2.5 foot leader and berley cage(plastic white ones), sometimes when they are a seaload of them and they dont bite thats when the sabiki jig comes out or the dodgy way =)

when i catch them the only two baits that i have used is maggots and squid.

i preffer squid tho because it dosent stink as much as growing maggots altho u can buy clean maggots now. wen i was in busso we got of 40 (only keep 20 between 2 people for tailor bait) we got them all on squid. the way i got them was a small float and a tiny hook. i just cast out in my burley trail and wind in slowly and the gars will follow the float in then u stop the retrive and they will eat ur bait. but alot of the time u start winding in again and wen u get the float near the shore u realise u hooked one lol.

my best gardie to date was a 45cm one from the nose to tail and i didnt know i had it till i lifted the rod and the gardie pulled down haha.

I've used all the usual baits- maggots, prawn, worm, etc but my go to baits were either garfish flesh (knock a fillet off the first one and use tiny pieces to land the rest) or flies (actual flies, the annoying type). I figured this out cos march flies were giving me the sh*ts when fishing for gar once and after killing a few on my legs I chucked one on a hook and have never looked back.
Also landed good numbers- particularly big ones- on Gulp sandworms.

niiiice! I got a huge one trolling a 3inch plastic behind the ski last week while catching salmon trout, the gardie wouldve gone about 45cm! Didnt foul hook it or anything, plastic was actually in its mouth! Anyone else ever experienced this?

Interestingly enough, that jig looks very similar to a gardy (minus the beak)

Yeh, they were smashing it! They went so hard man, couldn't get them off the bottom. Snapped my 200lb braid off lots of times! They must have been trying to mate with it. lol

How many people clicked on this thread actually thinking it was about landbased jigging. haha

nice feed of fish fingers there.they come up great when fried like that. cant say i have ever filleted them tho, always butterflied them.
