Submitted by Peter73 on Tue, 2012-05-29 21:56
Hi all ,
Wondering if any one has had same problem and can help out at all.
Been having an annoying little problem popping up every now and then . After a day on the water with motor flushing at idle the over heat alarm will sometime sound or when I,ve been motoring for a while and troll just below 2000 rpm or have motor idling alarm will sound . If I troll 2000rpm or above it's all sweet .
Water is always running through okay with no blockages and I have had checked out with the proper software And all comes up fine . Boat is serviced every 12 months and checked over before every big trip I do by qualified mechanic . Any help would be appreciated
Thanks Peter

Thermostats
Hi Peter,
I had similar problem with Yammi 150 V6 found that the rubber insert on the thermostat as it opened it dragged the rubber seal forward and closed off the opening at operating temp. I still had water flow out the tail pipe as this was coming from the port bank. When it happens again try infra red temp gauge & point at the thermostats see if there's any difference between the port & starboard bank.

Evinrude over heating
I had a problem of over heating at high revs and no body could work out why. All the so called experts had no idea and eventually gave up and said sorry can't help. (Needless to say i don't have an eveinrude anymore) Still could not sell knowing that this problem was there.
However it does have a happy ending as i took it back to where i purchased the motor and they eventually found (after a number of weeks) that the stainless impeller housing had worn or expanded slightly and not provided enough water flow. Water was still coming out of the tell tail but simply not enough. The impellers were getting changed at service but not the housing.
When this was replaced magic no problem all fixed. Just could be something for you to consider.

dual sensors
as the others have said , get your rig to a dealers or research , i was told that the Etecs have two temp sensors located on either side of the block so it may be one is suspect ?

Thanks for the replies gives
Thanks for the replies gives me a couple things to look for . When I sort it I'll let you know funngames . Apart from this little problem engine runs sweet and always reliable . Never had a 4 stoke so can't really comment on them but in my opinion it's like buying a landcruiser over a Patrol they both do the job . It's just the Patrol does it better for a lot less dollars . I tend to get the best I can afford and try and steer away from all the marketing bull .
Thanks again

hi, i have an 130 etec, it is
hi,
i have an 130 etec, it is a problem they all have, its something to do with how the cooling system works , i think it has something to do with the valving on the cooling system at <2000rpm the water pump is pumping the water through engine and at a certain rev the water pump stops pumping somehow and the water forced in the intake from speed is enough to push water through engine , but for some reason at this low rev range there isnt enough speed to push water through but also the water pump isnt pumping through, casuing it to overheat.
basically they all do it and i have asked my dealer about it and they all say its normal which is bull, they also told me that there is a modifacation to the thermostats you can do to prevent it but havnent gone down that path yet, only overheated once.
i agree you should have got a 4 stroke , i wish i didnt get sucked into the cheaper now marketing. in the long run the etec will cost more with more fuel consumption, oil consumption not to mention they are no where near as quiet as a 4 stroke maybe conparable at idle but not at full noise.

simler problem
I have a 6 hp 4 stroke,10 months old, that would get so hot you could smell the oil, and couldnt hold your hand on the cylinder block when idling along but would run fine at revs . After looking at the impeller of the water pump, deciding it looked good, checking the thermostat, flushing the block, water piping e.t.c., we fitted a new impeller. The problem is fixed. I cannot see any thing wrong with the old impeller, other than the ends are a bit curved, but it seems that was the issue.
I hope your problem is as easy/cheap to solve as mine. Marrisy
