Exmouth in Close - offshore

Hi all,

Followed a great post last week of Ruby's out wide in Exmouth

I am taking my 2 lads aged 8 + 10 to Exmouth for school holidays with our 4.5 m boat in tow

Just wondering about safety of getting out on the west side and what are my chances of getting them a fish in close

We wont be heading out into the 200 m mark, I wish but would love to get them onto a few fish in close

Would love to troll as the boys tend not to get sea sick doing this so hopefully can get them a Mackie before the sharks hit

What if any are their chances of a reef fish or two not far from the ramp

Are the leads easy to follow on the way out from Tantabiddi?

Appreciate any forthcoming Help

Please dont hesitate to Pm me with any pointers

Nothing better than getting your kids onto some quality Fish

Also any advice on Landbased as well as I am sure thay will only get out in the boat once or twice and we have 10 nights up there

Cheers Guys

a good quality 4.5m with deep sides will easy get you out amongst the fish mate.  Markers are easy to follow out and your map will show you the rest.  Usually mack's behind the reef and out to 40m.  Sails and blacks around the 80m And deeper.. Behind the reef can also be great fishing if you head south and cast half mulies around the bommies

Hi Coach

There are plenty of fish inside the reef from tantabiddi down to south passage as well as just outside the reef .

Time and tide play a big part on when the fish are on the bite but a lttle burly goes a long way (inside the reef ) . Just find a bommie and burly up and the fish will come to you .

Getting out past the reef at Tantabiddi is well marked and there are good areas to try for a bottom fish not far out and the tuna etc are usually busting up on the 30mtr line at some stage in the day .

Send me a pm if you have any specific questions and ill help as much as i can.

Cheers

Paul

200m mark off Westside is only 5 mile out so not too far for a boat that size in decent weather

anchor and burley with mulies and lightly weighted drift baits in 15 m for spangles and other assorted just look for the bommies

caught Marlin often in a 4 m Stacer trolling the 100 m mark south from  Tantabiddi.

Exmouth fishing

North inside the reef at tantabiddy up near the reef and watch the water coming over the reef. Cant remember how far as gps was not around 25-30 yrs ago. Only had a paper chart FE400 Furuno sounder as well.

Find a sandy bottom amongst the coral and anchor. You will see the bottom as there is only 6-8 ft of water.

Use mulies on 3 ganged 6/0s with 100lb trace with no sinker. A heavy trace makes for easier lifting into the boat and the possibility of toothy critters being around like med to large cod or even GTs. This will make burley when the baits get hit.

On another rod use same trace but use occy squid as bait as it is harder to remove. Spangles love this type of bottom as there are sea urchins galore.

On a windy westerly day and you cant get out the west side it is worth going to Learmonth and fish between the old jetty and what was NW seafoods. There is a lot of coral around ther and the times ws fished there got coral trout amongst the catch but you will loose rigs so make a mob of them up. Out from the tamarisk trees is a good place to try.

The shoals the gulf are worth a try on an incoming tide and your gps will make them easier to find than we did.

Make sure that you are fishing where you are allowed and ensure that size is measured as the fisheries are very strict. Also posession limits are adhered to along with licences. If in doubt contact the fisheries.
