Exmouth fishing advice

 Hi Everyone,

Long time reader but first time poster here. I am going to Exmouth with a few of my mates next week and I need some advice. Firstly, we will be fishing in 60+ metres and bottom bashing. I want to try using SPs, but not sure on what size jighead and what type of SP to use. Lumo? Scented? Size? Shad or other?

I want to rig up a padernoster with a snelled bait and also a SP on another hook, will this work? I will also have another rod where I will be working my single SP.

Has anyone had any luck with SPs in this kind of depth? and if so, what am I likely to catch? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ryan

local info

Best bet mate is to pop into the local tackle world or fishing shop in town who will give you the lo down on whats happening.I am no SP expert so cant help on that front. Just expect to cover some miles to find the ground as it can be hard work finding any fish at times. Make sure you have your pelagic lures out when moving as the maks and wahoo have saved my trip on several occassions when the bottom bashing has beed quiet. Check your maps and target an area is the go I recon. Lucky bugger wish I was going, have to wait till June. Enjoy and hope you do well.

You can get some Gammakatsu

You can get some Gammakatsu SP hooks for paternoster rigs.

a little tip, grab a bag of rubber bands and link a couple together and loop on between your rig and your sinker.. This will act as like a shock absorber and keep your sinker on the bottom and can jig the plastics up and down. Saves a lot of energy and stops the sinker flying up through the water column as well.

Fishing? You always learn new tricks!!

As mentioned above troll and look. But also as a relative novice there I did follow the contour lines on the C-map, found a few spots to tickle the taste buds, and then progressed to find other "better" spots. Did this both Gulf and West side.

Lived in Kcity but travelled down there a few times, and soon had some decent spots. And when all else fails it is great fun with surface lures among the bombies behind the reef if the wind stops the wideout trips. 7m boat just be careful among the rocks.

The Murion Islands are also worth exploring, just watch sanctuaries. Again I started with contours, but there soon had some very nice spots and had a blast BBouncing.

Weights for SP, the smallest that will get you to the bottom is a rule. If it is to heavy the SP is liveless, to light and the razor gang will kill your offering, or you will never get there. Paternoster with a SP on the top hook works well, and I love Bodies idea, and think it will work very well.

Jigs will get fish, but not IMO as many as down south, and other than CTrout the redfish we are all after doesnt seem to be a jig lover, but when all else fails, jig a gold twisty. You might be surprised.

Good luck.

Like that one huh!! :) yep new tricks!

Not really used this method down here in the south, but up north i have and works really well, especially in deeper water with current (Using a 12-16 sinker) can keep the plastics. I found jigging them quite frantically worked real well.

Clever, and does stop the sinker from spooking fish, which has always "worried" me about a paternoster rigged SP. The band can also make the placky dart back towards the reef, and from trying to picture what might happen I think it could be a winner. Will try it and let you know.
