Trumpeter

AnyOne here eaten trumpeter before?  It's never crossed my mind until today.

Was watching a fishing show on fox today and they were saying how great eating they are. Better than a silver morwong (haven't tried that either).   Having said this the trumpeter was at least 50cm long and had shoulders like a Chinese swimmer. They were caught in tassie.  Looked just like ours only massive.

So, who here's eaten trumpeter, and what did you think?

Never eaten them but i was catching some huge trumpeter at GI the other day. Always heard they are full of bones and taste like the postmans jocks. Apparently they are really good for people low on iron.

What i want to know is how they go as bait?

yeah tassie trumpeter are like

yeah tassie trumpeter are like a 4 star eating fish. ours, not so much :P. bait wise live ones work for mulloway as they make the same noise as mulloway, and dead baits work well for squid and rays

Good for old people

Heaps of iodine in them. Personally though (although I am old) I would never bother keeping one. They are great fun to catch because they do fight a bit in surf. If they are around I generally expect some Mulloway action.

 The trumpeter we get here

Sat, 2011-12-24 18:40

The trumpeter we get here (six lined trumpeter and sea trumpeter) are crap to eat and crap for bait compared to proabably 90% of other commonly caught fish. That being said, they are edible and some people do eat them, i have no idea why though when you can catch other far nicer fish just as easily.

Trumpeter for Bait....

Sat, 2011-12-24 20:42

They make good crab bait... Thick skin helps to prevent the frigging blowies getting to them.

Not a table fish

Sat, 2013-01-26 12:10

After seeing them for sale at a fish monger, I tried smoking some that my kids and I caught.  They weren't bad, but they were only just a pass mark.  I won't be going back for seconds.
