Exmouth last week in October.

I read a lot of reports on this site but never post to much thought I should have a go since you lads have provided many highlights this year, especially during the footy season!!!

Went for our annual trip up north this year, was planning on going to Coral Bay to avoid the Exmouth shark plague, however at short notice there was little accomidation and too expensive so Exmouth it was. Suprised that time of the year the accomidation was very cheap for a good house on the canals.

Sharks lived up to the expectations however after a few days we felt a few things did help. No deck wash, turn off live well and keep dead fish on board. We could then get 3-4 drifts in (if we were lucky) before they turned up. It didn't seem to matter what depth we we're at, we had to keep doing this tactic from 35m to 350m as it was the same situation.

In total we fished 5 days and got really lucky with the weather. Before and after was windy, might be something in the old tale that winds tend to drop on the full moon!!!

1st day we got into plenty of Scarlet Sea Perch, Rankin, Cobia and Mackies. Day 2 we couldn't leave the floater out as the Mackies kept buzzing the boat. Kept 3 and released 4 in about 30mins, some days you can't even fine one then other days can't get away from them. Nice problem to have! Days 3 and 4 went to westside to chase Rubies. We found them in a big bunch on 300m line top of the drop off as Ryan has explained in many of his comments. Was nice to tick them off my bucket list.

Those of you going up that way we found coming into South Passage on low tide a breeze this year, the new ramp was perfect even on the bottom of the tide.

Will try and put up a few photos hope they work out!

Cheers Humpback

Hey mate, great report and pic's.

Gotta love Exmouth.

We have been up a few times now, but have never ventured out of south passage. Always just followed the markers to the north.

Is it tricky to do? Anything to watch out for etc?

Must save heaps of time going that way.

Cheers

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Thanks for the nice comments gents.

Bucko: never had to much trouble heading out south passage or coming home that way. On your way out your natural instinct is to head further out to sea but the deepest part is closer to the shore line on the way south. Quiet a few big bombies to watch out for but common sence will get you through no problems. Really is a spectacular drive and lots of sea life in shallow water.

GiilyL : thanks mate had the car and boat just on 3 years, very good truck for towing using no more fuel than my old 200 series turbo diesel cruiser sitting on 105km it reads 1500 revs so not working hard at all. old boat was a 235 conquest. love the whalers chews through the sloppy seas.

Dkonig82: sorry mate no sounder shots was to busy fishing !! Was not a huge dispay on the screen just a few solid fish the area i found them in was quiet small. Most fish sitting on top of a ledge that was 290 m that dropped sharply to 315m. Hope that helps.

Thanks Adam have always enjoyed your site without making to many posts hope to do a few more. First time i met you many years ago we were always a bit wary of this young bloke hanging around the cleaning tables for frames doing research !! we thought you were a uni student living of the wings and frames. Or collecting endless supply of crab bait HA HA HA

Keep up the good work.
