D O T sticker
DOT put out a sticker that you can attach to a convenient place to remind yourself of the expiry dates of "lifed" items.

Well good on them
A little bit of good old fashioned policing , and not Fine Fine Fine. Same result , you have new flares but instead of being upset you respect them. Well done guys.

Remember to keep your 'perfect condition' old expired flares on the boat. I have mine in a tub marked "EXPIRED" and my new ones in seperate tub, both tied to tbe EPIRB. If needed the expired ones will probably work fine and not only will you have plenty of flares, but you save your in date ones for next time (hopefully there wont be a next time).

They cant fine (or warn you) about carrying expired flares as long as you have new ones. I have every set on the boat I have bought in the last 10 yrs (4 sets) and like Randall will use the last expired first, but it depends on what type of emergency you are in!!

When i was working in that
When i was working in that industry we used to have people wanting to hand their expired flares in for destruction. We used to tell them, hang onto them and use them first if needed.

I got checked leaving out of two rocks marina recently
so best to check them dates would be easy to forget during the demersal ban when not going out as much

DOT sticker is great
I have the sticker in the workshop. Great way to keep on top of EPERB and flare dates.
I also keep out of date flares with in date ones.

It's a sticker from the Department of Transport
The sticker has spaces to write you EPIRB and flare out of dates on. Then you peel the back off and stick it somewhere which you look at from time to time.
Call DOT and they send you one.

Another option is to set
Another option is to set "alarms" on your mobile. Phones these days allow you to set up multiple alarms. For example, my flares expire in April 2016, so on my phone I have an alarm for 31/03/16 titled "Flare expire". Same goes for Epirb, fishing license etc.
It might sound geeky, but it could save some headaches down the track!

Was talk of an app by amsa at
Was talk of an app by amsa at he VMR conference a few years ago. The general consensus was most people don't hang onto their phone for more than a couple of years and apps that are sitting there with really doing much are more likely to get deleted.

D O T stickers
D O T put out a good sticker for putting the expiry date of all your safety gear and you can put the sticker in a prominent place.
