Exmouth trip
Submitted by Brad Y on Mon, 2012-07-02 11:29
Just got back from a quick week long trip to exmouth. Wind blew its nuts off for all but one day. We braved it some days and shore fished in little protected bays the others, and spent an arvo flicking lures around the marina. Plus we drunk beer and ate at pinnochios and planet burger when we felt like it.
Brought a few spangly fillets home as well as some cod, and released a heap of goldens and a couple of bonefish as well. Didnt get sharked once, even including a few hours bottom fishing out from south passage. Saw a few, but landed all our fish.
A roo decided it didnt like a mudguard on my trailer on the trip up so we did some running repairs with a blue chemical drum in carnarvon
And some more

They were trying to escape
They were trying to escape through the drain hole in my live tank. Sad for them, those tentacles got chopped off and coated and fried up in the wok with chilli and garlic....mmmm tasty squids

Those are some awesome bonies
Those are some awesome bonies - those buggers go hard!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Train- yep was a bit average
Train- yep was a bit average thats for sure.
I dont like the new tantabiddi ramp. I think I actually prefer the old ramp setup. Now it gets busier than peak hour on the freeway and trying to drive on and drive off the trailer is crap. I used to do it fine with the old boat on the old ramp there, but the finger jetties stuff it up if you need to approach from the north or south a bit more. Doesnt help when you get distracted by tight yellow knickers and camel toes on ladies holding boats either... I have a gelcoat repair job to do after I drove blind right into the wrong part of the trailer Was worth it tho.

where abouts did you get those bonefish/golden trevs off the shore? heading up there in a few weeks for some shore based action and wouldn't mind getting onto a bonefish!

Haha brett it put a sweet
Haha brett it put a sweet bend in the magnum butt too- when it got to shore it spat the hook so I threw the rod and reel into the drink and lept on the fish. Got it on video. Took the reel apart to try and get the sand out but its not healthy... back to shimano for an overhaul i think...
Brad- Galey is sweet. Couldnt ask for a better boat for the fishing I do. Out deep jigging demersals or in shallow moving around structure and throwing lures. Keen to add a removable rear platform or even a removable poling platform to it for a bit more shallow water fishing- especially now the summer is coming, I have plans for spending some serious time in walpole and albany.
Shorething- mate I asked heaps of crew and never got much joy and put in two years worth of trips trying to find them so sorry for not coming forth with an exact location. But for what its worth you need to just look for areas that have good sandflats near some structure. Fish the rising tide. Theres bonefish/trevs/queenies anywhere from the eastern gulf all the way down the gulf all the way round and probably past yardie creek. I wasnt targeting them so it was a bit of a fluke but stoked to finally find them. Just need to be in the right place at the right time i guess. Had plenty of success over the years shore fishing with plastics and metals, just the incoming tide is the big factor and finding the decent flats. Exmouth bonefish are apparently pretty hit and miss- its not like christmas island or the bahamas where they are right up in close and you sight fish them. These suckers were in water probably 1.5m deep and for all I knew, they were trevally until I got them to shore.

Cheers lads, now I know where they are I will crack out the flyrod and try one on that. Forgot to say there was a heap of bait at oysters too when I stopped in friday arvo. But no GT's showed up. Just frickin mozzies. Still got that to tick off the exmouth bucket list.
