Exploding Batteries - BEWARE!
Submitted by Formerathlete on Wed, 2015-04-08 08:21
I was sitting watching TV last night when a massive bang came from the patio. The eBay cheapie headlamp I had on charge had exploded and set fire to a cloth bag nearby. I have had this thing for over a year but haven't had a problem before. This was potentially a very dangerous situation. Lucky i was there to quickly put the fire out. I'm chucking out the spare unit I have and won't ever be tempted to buy this cheap crap again. I have read countless times before and now I urge everyone: use the site sponsors to buy local (and safe).

brand or link?
Mate could you please post some info on the brand, battery or maybe even the link to the site you bought it off so we can see what battery / charger etc was involved. I bought a couple of 5000 lumen Cree headlamps so I wouldn't mind checking if they are similar to your one that exploded.
Cheers and thanks for the heads up on this.

Holy crap, I thought it was a led lenser. Looks almost the same as my h14r. I wonder if they use the same batteries and charger.

Fire resistant bags - for charging batteries or charge them where nothing else can catch fire....

It was listed on eBay as "New
It was listed on eBay as "New 1800Lm CREE XM-L LED Zoomable Headlamp Head Torch 4x18650 Battery + Charger" Surprise surprise but the seller is no longer listed on ebay. The batteries were labelled as Ultrafire. Yes I kid you not! A google search revealed that most of these are Chinese rebadged/recycled laptop batteries. There are also heaps of warnings about their reliability and safety. Sorry I can't shed more light than that (pun intended)

Yeah thats why they airlines
Yeah thats why they airlines dont want them in your luggage. I had one explode in my backpack once, didn't realise my car keys were in the same pocket, they must have shorted the terminals causing it to explode, all the plastic handles on the keys were melted.

Consumer Affairs some time
Consumer Affairs some time ago if I recall correctly, made it illegal for sellers to sell certain types of chargers that didn't have Australian compliance. I think this was because they caused a couple of deaths through electricution.
Something to look into anyway.

Has the ultrafire batteries also. certainly dont think ill be charging this in the car...looks like i might have to roll the extension cord out into the middle of the paved area in the backyard for charging hahaha

Yep looks very similar turtl3tim. They actually work pretty well when they are not exploding and scaring the shit out of the dog. Best of luck with it. Ive decided to buy a decent one from a real shop!

maybe its something to do
maybe its something to do with the input voltage when charging? i know aus is 240v. isnt china 220v? maybe that extra 20v over the year and a bit when charging has damaged the batteries, causing them to EXPLODE!?!
