Fads west of rotto

Afternoon gents. Been fishing around the west for a few years now, but this Sunday we are hoping to head out to the fads for the first time. Noticed some interesting area around 20kms west of rotto while playing around with Navionics on the iPad.

Suppose my question is, what can we expect and tips for fishing the area.

Will be trolling hard lures and skirts, and also drifting using fresh whole whiting/herring and fillets plus fresh squid

any info is appreciated .

Oh and boat is 28ft Whitley. Cheers

For the supreme test of a fisherman is not how many fish he has caught, not even how he has caught them, but what he has caught when he has caught no fish.

Wondering

Was wondering if you headed out there.
Looks like this year is going to be a late start for pelagic action.
Last year was pretty slow as well

FADs thoughts

Wed, 2016-12-07 07:02

I haven't heard any reports of fish on the FADs yet.  I'll be heading out to the trench on Sat so will probably check out a couple of the FADs on the way out.

If there are dollies there, I've found small metal heads with plastic skirts or feather type lures in pink to be the best.  Sometimes sinking stickbaits will work.

Also a chance of juvenile yellowtail kingfish hanging around, they can be fun on ultralight gear.

Going to hit the FADs this

Wed, 2016-12-07 13:41

Going to hit the FADs this weekend, may push out to the trench if the weather permits. Probably do some trolling at the FADs (and between them), and may jump in for a look. Tossing up the idea of doing some cubing too.
