False floor carpet
Submitted by plugga25 on Sat, 2016-12-31 21:22
Hey guys, I recently scored an old 5m Quintrex as a project boat.
I need to replace the false floor in it. I am basically stuck with using 1/2 inch marine ply as the floor.
(Old floor is the same) The biggest thing i need is what is the best stuff to use to glue the carpet to the ply?
The carpet was given to me by a mate who got it from BCF so its got no rubber backing on it.
Cheers

1/2 inch sounds a bit thin,
1/2 inch sounds a bit thin, think is 3/4 in my quintrex. Contact adhesive glue would be the go for the carpet.

I used kwik grip
I used kwik grip and I'm pretty sure my floor was 12mm... I had all my stringers welded together with some tubing, on the outside and down the centre... floor was solid as after that... cost about $150 to get welded up. I also coated the timber with the kwik grip and used over sized washers when screwing floor down.

2nd for kwik grip
12mm will do the job, just, but 16mm is best. With that sort of hull, you generally don't have much distance to span between supports. Give the ply a good coat of oil-based primer before you fit the carpet, it will last a very long time.

The existing floor is 1/2
The existing floor is 1/2 inch. I cant go thicker as the boat has a floor clamp strip running up the keel line for the lenght of the floor. If i go 3/4 it wont fit unfortunately.
If i use kwik grip, would I be better of using the brush on as opposed to the spray on Im thinking.
Ranmar, can you suggest a good oil based primer or would any one do the job?

Buy a tin of kwik grip
Buy a tin of kwik grip (about 4l) do as I mentioned about welding the floor mountings together (cheap!) and 12mm will last years! I only used the kwik grip to seal the floor... it was wet down every week from use and no issues what so ever.

I may have only sealed the bottom and edges,
last one I did, with some generic pink primer, can't remember if I did the topside?I put the qwickgrip on with the scraper you get with the tin. Ply was still perfect after 5 years, I would think it is reasonable to expect 10 years from this sort of thing, as long as you don't use cheap ply.

If the clamping strip is
If the clamping strip is the same as what was on my old Quintrex - I would remove it and just screw the floor down. I would also suggest to remove the small tabs on the ribs that the edges of the floor go under - if it has them...
