Fatal shark attack 20m from shore!!!!

Shocked witnesses have described a sea "full of blood" after a fatal shark attack just metres from shore in South Africa.

Zimbabwean Lloyd Skinner, 37, was standing in water estimated to be less than 20m from the beach at Fish Hoek, Cape Town, when the great white attacked on Tuesday.

"We saw the shark come back twice," the Cape Times reported British tourist Phyllis McCartain as saying.

"It had the man's body in its mouth, and his arm was in the air.

"Then the sea was full of blood."

Horrified witnesses on the beach desperately screamed to swimmers to get out of the water.

"We looked at the walkway and saw people waving towels at us, then we looked further out to sea and saw what looked like blood, and a man's leg come up," nearby swimmer Kyle Johnston was reported as saying.

Beaches at the popular holiday location, currently in the height of its summer season, were yesterday shut down.

No remains of the victim have been found despite a widespread water search.

Last year, South Africa recorded six shark attacks, four of which were fatal.

They are protected so they can breed with no regulation as such. The greater there population becomes the more attacks will happen in the future. JMO

I have been to Fish Hoek. What a beautiful spot

Thu, 2010-01-14 15:49

My late wife's sister lived near there and we spent a great week looking around the area.

I would certainly think twice about swimming aroud there though as there were seals and penguins in the area and the water looked pretty sharky.

my old home town Fish

Thu, 2010-01-14 17:13

my old home town Fish Hoek,

we often saw big great whites there and it's the second attach in the last 10 years, with a 78yrs old lady swimmer taken in 2004.

here is the link to the story.

http://www.news24.com/Content/SouthAfrica/News/1059/d4ed14ded2a9426aa4dcd5638a3255ab/12-01-2010-11-15/Shark_rips_tourist_apart

this bay is about 7~9 km from where they took most of the Air Jaws jumping shots and in the ones with the GW taking the seals you can often see the quarried mountain in the back ground, thats Fish Hoe Bay, in False Bay..
Then again every weekend close to 400,000 people go to the beach's in Cape Town ( yes out of a population of over 3 million, about 15% go to the beach every weekend) so for three attacks in the region in ten years, it's not that bad, compared to the 25 that die every weekend in car accidents on the way and back from the beach in Cape Town.

oh and the whole week there had been shark sightings and black flags flying at the lifeguards, meaning very poor visibility and swimming not recommended. so you'd be foolish to go snorkeling in merky water with less than 5 feet viss!!! I'd say he cast his dice once to often and came up with a bad call this time. We use to snorkel of Glencairn, about 2km south of Fish Hoek and often see 2~5m GW cruising just out from the main reef.

that lady in 2004 was another person who was warned by locals that a shak has been sighted and that there is murky water though she ignored them and went for a swim all they found of her was her cap? am i correct?

that old lady swam everyday

Fri, 2010-01-15 18:45

that old lady swam everyday for close to 50 years and she would still have gone out for a swim even if she knew she was going to be shark bait. Her family is well known in the Fish Hoek area and where sad, yet recognized she died doing something she loved and what a way to go, better than in a bed in a nursing home! ( that was her grandsons own words!!!)

got some info from the rotto

Fri, 2010-01-15 11:20

got some info from the rotto fisheries officer who has said the numbers of GW's outt hat way has increased dramatically, and the number of GW's they have tagged and are tracking is amazing.

He quietly said some culling may be required in the near future, as the numbers are increasing but the normal GW food supply is decreasing (seal numbers are declining) so its only natural for them to find an alternative, being us.

Fri, 2010-01-15 11:25

we used to always see some big great whites when we went down that way for holiday. sometimes u see em about 20m away from surfers just out the back of the wave breaks. most locals do get used to them but they really only dangerous if there is one where there usually isnt. like if u see em there regularly with ppl they wont do anything only when i see a new one that it could be rogue or just think there might be a seal (people looking like seals) in that area.

Great white "dinosaur huge"

Fri, 2010-01-15 11:56

Twitter user posts as 'dinosaur huge' shark eats tourist in Cape Town

Fish Hoek beach

South African lifeguards search for remains of the shark attack victim on Fish Hoek beach in Cape Town / AAP Source: AAP

A HORRIFIED Twitter user tweeted the moment a tourist was killed in the
jaws of a "gigantic shark" in a South African holiday spot.

Gregg Coppen watched as Lloyd Skinner was savaged in Cape Town, South Africa, on Tuesday (local time) tweeting: "Holy shit. We just saw a gigantic shark eat what looked like a person in front of our house..."

He added: "That shark was huge. Like dinosaur huge."

Mr Coppen witnessed the attack from his home near Fish Hoek beach during the height of the country's tourist season.

Later, speaking to the Cape Times, Mr Coppen described the shark as being "longer than a minibus and the rubber ducks lifeguards use".

Kyle Johnston, told the Cape Times he and his friends had been swimming near the man when the shark struck.

"We were swimming only about 15m away from the guy. We were at about chest depth and he was a little deeper.

"We looked at the walkway and saw people waving towels at us, then we looked further out to sea and saw a fin and blood.

Denis Lundon, from Ireland, saw the swimmer being thrust chest-high out of the sea.

"I jumped, waved my hat and roared and screamed at swimmers to get out of the water," he said.

Mr Lundon's friend Phyllis McCartain, from England, said he saw the shark come back twice.

"It had the man's body in its mouth. Then the sea was full of blood."

The attack prompted the closure of several beaches.

Meanwhile, shark researchers took to the water to try to hunt down the shark.

"Eyewitness accounts ... certainly indicate that the gentleman was killed almost instantly," Gregg Oelofse of Cape Town's environmental services said.

It is the second deadly shark attack in the area in less than a month.

Last year, South Africa had six shark attacks, four of them fatal.

no point arguing with some

Sat, 2010-01-16 10:56

no point arguing with some one who has b-g-a knowledge of GW's.
a friend of mine is one of the top researchers in the world on GW's. He is guy in the kayak being followed off Camps Bay in South Africa and also the guy that pats them on their snout in the pics. His name is Michael Scholl and studied GW's for close on 15 years in False Bay.
http://whitesharktrust.co.za/
go to his website and learn a little mate.
GW's are very much endangered and protected. You will be lucky to see one in the wild once a year if you don't chum near a cage dive spot,

god your full of it tony.

god your full of it tony. the amount of people you claim to know, its laughable!

just like the photos you posted a few years back claiming they were your catches/photos.  show us a picture of you with the man, and we might believe you

if the shark has been positivly identified, and is seen back again, shoot the bastard! simple. we see more and more gw every year, and any researcher with half a brain would recognise that more sightings means 1 of 2 things. either more sharks, or the sharks are running out of food and looking in differnt areas to normal ( hence more sightings)

Sat, 2010-01-16 21:35

well send me your e-mail address and
I'll forward Michael's last e-mail to me!
Micheal worked with many people in the fishing community of Simonstown and Fish Hoek, two very small coastal towns.

Michale moved back to Europe just over a year ago when they ran out of funds for the White Shark Trust, but others carry on the research. Those include people who grew up with me in Fish Hoek and went to the same school as me. People like Dannie Scheoman still carry on research with locals.

oh and he is not a close personal friend of mine, just some one I have met on occasions and e-mail now and again...
