Favourite Mackie Lures

Just curious to know what people find to be their most productive lures or colours when targeting mackies?

Been in to a couple different tackle stores lately looking for a few more for the collection and to take up to Exmouth in a few weeks time, and have found every person you speak to at the tackel stores has a different opinion.

Got me thinking as to weather there is actually a more productive colour in General or if colours really matter at all?

People have always said red heads work the best.. but personally, ive caught stuff all on them! I've found gold to the more productive colour and the lures to be 5m divers.

Whats everyone elses opinon? guess location, water clarity and so on probably all play a part too.

Deeper divers in the middle

Thu, 2013-02-28 12:38

Deeper divers in the middle of the day.  Apparently mackie eyes are a bit sensitive to bright sunlight and they will hang deeper in the middle of the day.

Colour doesn't really matter if they are biting

For years the purple chrome

Thu, 2013-02-28 13:09

For years the purple chrome halco was my favourtie mackie lure and accounted for several over 50lb including a very good Wahoo, it never failed. Then, for whatever reason over the past two years it went off and hasn't caught a thing despite being brought out every opportunity.

This has been replaced by the Rapala X-Rap deep diver in the blue or green and a great thumping Yozuri Hydro Magnum in Orange, both account for mackies and tuna when others dont produce. Not sure if its the colour or the action but agree with Pale Ale, on bright days you need to get down deep.

Last 4 macks...

Thu, 2013-02-28 13:09

...first 3 at Jurien, last one behind Garden Island, in order:

Chrome pink Halco Crazy Deep, redhead Rapala CD 18, redhead Classic F18, redhead Rapala Xrap 30...and missed a strike on a Rapala CD 18 silver mackerel pattern, which is also (for me) a good lure/colour for tuna and the odd YTK...

Hey Bodie, we had a mixed

Thu, 2013-02-28 15:24

Hey Bodie, we had a mixed spread when fishing up there in Jan last year and found that anything with gold dominated. I decided at the last minute to buy a 160 2m gold laser, that thing accounted for half a dozen tuna and mackies. We head up to exxy next week for gamex, might try some trolling after comp hours, will try put a report up to let you know how we go.

Not sure about trolling but

Thu, 2013-02-28 21:02

Not sure about trolling but for off the cliffs up north the one lure that I never bring home is the King Brown Halco Max. I was using a variety of other colours with no success and then changed to the KB and 1st cast I could barely start my retrieve and it was headed at 30 knots the other direction. Needless to say I'm taking 5 of them with me on my trip up north in a weeks time. I use Mack baits as well which have their day and they all seem to work at one point or another. I'm with you on the red head though, I have never had success with them either or purple for that matter.

not buying another halco

Thu, 2013-02-28 22:35

not buying another halco XDD again (although i have a few in the box) they swim like shit after a while even if the havent been hit, ive only been able to tune one to swim properly again, but it took me 30 minutes!! the eyes that the split rings connect to are rubbish and ruin even a hyperwire ring.

X rap 20/30s run sweet straight out of the box and are easier to tune. bluewater classic f18s are another good one.

Bought a Sebile 190mm deep diver (cannot remember exact name) from BW morley a while back and was assured it would get me fish. Would not swim at anything over 3 knots. I was not hapy considering the price tag that comes with sebile gear.

For colours i like Purple, Red head, shiny silver and i usually throw a weird one out there like orange, green or gold incase they want something different.

Yeah I bought one of those

Fri, 2013-03-01 12:19

Yeah I bought one of those ultra deep diving sebiles also. Thus far hasn't had a sniff even when other lures are getting smashed.

Also notice that I need near sunset drag on a tyrnos 20 to troll him at 7kn haha. Dives to 60ft+ I think though.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I don't think

Fri, 2013-03-01 17:11

colours are as important as where you troll them. We usually run Laser pro 190DD (XD are crap) and Xrap Mag 20.

Last year off Ningaloo we only caught Macks within 1km of the back of the reef. Any further out (30m+) was Wahoo, YFT and Sails

It is more the swimming

Fri, 2013-03-01 20:00

It is more the swimming action and the trace/connector that atracts or distracts the fish from having a go.

But,... that is only my oppinion.

spend time to make the lure swim straight and use the most unobtrusive leader/swivel.

Anything purple in shotgun

Mon, 2013-03-04 19:25

Anything purple in shotgun position seems to do well. Might be something to do with contrast against the wash above it. Otherwise i'm with howa and reckon king brown is always a winner.

Tue, 2013-03-05 21:14

i fished professionaly for them for a couple of years in carnarvon 99% of the time we used only halco laser pro190  2+ in black/gold, chrome pink, and red head we were prety successful, wen they were fussy we used gardies rigged on a 4 gang with a white skirt and a bean sinker running to the hooks trolled at 2 - 4 knots
